(Updated information on memory usage)
Editor's Note: I saw a couple of notes about an Internet site making
game patches and the like available for anonymous FTP. If you want
to be included in this FAQ, send me mail with the site information.
Introduction
============
This FAQ is an attempt to answer common questions about the game IndyCar
Racing (ICR), from Papyrus (see a computer store near you for a copy).
This FAQ will be posted periodically to rec.autos.simulators.

Questions and Answers
=====================
Q: I don't seem to have enough memory available. What can I do?
A: Version 1.0 does not work well in 4MB on all machines. Get the patch to
version 1.02 or higher (see question "Where can I get patches...").
Q: How should I create a boot disk?
A: 1. Take "start-up" disk made with the Install program and insert
it in drive A:.
2. Type "EDIT A:CONFIG.SYS" and add ONLY these two lines:
DEVICE=C:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DOS=HIGH
3. Save this file on your "start-up" disk.
4. Reboot your system with this disk in your A: drive.
Note: If you have a sound card which requires a sound driver in order
to run, you need to add a line to load your driver in your
CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT as appropriate.
needed, and that a "bypass the startup files" boot can ease some memory
problems for tracks such as Laguna Seca.
Q: Why won't my sound work when I boot from a boot disk?
A: You may need the sound driver for your sound card loaded. For instance,
the Pro Audio Spectrum uses the MVSOUND driver. Copy your MVSOUND line
from your hard drive's CONFIG.SYS to a CONFIG.SYS on your boot disk.
Q: How can I get ICR to work with my Gravis Ultrasound?
A: There are two ways to approach this problem:
- SBOS. SBOS will work with ICR by using the -o3 option (sbos -o3).
The sound is not as good (nor complete - some sounds are missing)
as a SoundBlaster.
- 32-bit AIL Drivers: Gravis has released a set of 32-bit AIL drivers
that work with the UltraSound (look for GAIL3213.ZIP on the UltraSound
archive sites). Follow the directions that come with these drivers.
This gets you music, crash noises, and Paul Page, but no engine or
tire sounds (these sounds require FM synthesis).
Q: What about modem play?
A: There are problems with the modem and direct connection options in the
1.0 - 1.02 versions of ICR. Papyrus is working on a patch which should
fix the problems people are having with it.
Q: What about add-on tracks?
A: Papyrus is working on add-on race tracks for ICR, scheduled for release
in the 2nd quarter of 1994.
Q: Why is my frame rate SO slow??
A: a) You may be running in Manual Detail with more graphics turned on than
your computer can handle. Try Automatic Detail in OPTIONS/GRAPHICS.
b) You may be running a memory manager which slows down program operation.
Run from a clean boot.
c) Your system may have slow memory (many wait states). If you can
decrease the wait states in your BIOS setup, do so. (To tell if you
have too many wait states, get UTIL.ZIP from the Papyrus FTP site and
run PMINFO.EXE after a clean boot. If the numbers in parenthesis are
greater than 10, your memory access is slow.)
Q: How can I get the menu selection not to scroll?
A: Make sure your Joystick 1's Y axis is calibrated and centered. Press
control-J when in the main menu, or delete the CALIB.VAL file in the
indycar directory and restart the program.
Q: Where can I get patches for ICR?
A: The 1.02 patch is variously known as icr102.zip or icr102.exe. The .exe
is a self-extracting archive.

Q: Does Papyrus have an FTP site?
A: Yes. On world.std.com (192.74.137.5) in the /ftp/vendors/papyrus
directory. The version 1.02 patch is available there, as well as various
comments or queries.
