OT: Washington DC ALMS race cancelled this year

by SS » Tue, 11 Mar 2003 01:56:51

I was disappointed to read in the Washington Post that the ALMS series race
scheduled for the RFK Stadium track in DC this year has been cancelled.
Last year was the first year for the series to race in DC, and there were
apparently a lot of complaints about noise by residents located very near
the makeshift track.  There was some back and forth between the city and the
race organizers, some feathers were ruffled, and in the end the organizers
pulled out.  They estimate that the race brought $12 million in direct
spending to the district last year....I think the DC officials really
botched things.  And as for the nearby residents complaining of noise....I
mean, come on...it's 105 decibels of such NICE noise....

Yeah,

It's ridiculous that the whining of only 90 residents was enough to kill
such a great event.  It's a fairly noisy low-income neighborhood that I used
to live near.  It's also a neighborhood that's probably included in the
mayor's revitalization project...they really could have used some of the
extra money brought in by the ALMS event to help in the revitalization
project.  I can't help but wonder if there was some sort of racial issue
between the neighborhood reps, the city officials, and the race
organizers...  Oh well, just another***up by D.C.

I wonder why these people don't complain about the crowd noise during
football games there.  At least here in Pgh, Heinz Field generates
pretty close to that much noise in the area during football season,
and most of the people in the neighborhood don't think it's a big
deal.

The Redskins don't play football games at RFK stadium anymore, which is
where the ALMS event was located last year.

In a neighborhood which has been listening to rock concerts for 20 years.  Some
of which go on 'til midnight.

Would *you* want a race in your own backyard?  Of course, that's not a fair
statement because most of us would LOVE it.  But think of something that you'd
hate...say an NSYNC concert...  That's probably how they feel about the
races...

They should have thought of that when they bought a house next to a stadium.
Just like the people who bought next to a major interstate, now my tax money
goes to putting up sound walls to improve their property values.  Considering
that most of the residents of DC can't be bothered to pay their taxes, the huge
economic boom this race brought to the city should offset three days of noise
in the middle of the day.  Remember that these people chose to live next to
what was known to be the "loudest stadium in the NFL".

Exactly how far *are* the closest houses from the stadium?  As far as the
interstate issue, when was the interstate run?  In this area, they built an
interstat connector right THROUGH an existing neighborhood.  And of course, the
property values probably dropped(I don't know, as I have no interest in living
near an interstate).  I don't see this as the homeowners' fault...they were
already THERE.

There are no football games there.

Also, football games with their max noise levels are for a much shorter
time than a racing event that has practice sessions, qualifying trials
et al before the actual race takes place.
