My PII Dell 266 is a smoking system.  I'm sure Gateway is pretty comparable
.  I have my Screamin 3D card installed with a Zoom 56K Flex modem and
everythings working perfect.  Now if the 56k USR  x2 modem that came with
the system worked with my ISPs system I'd be even happier....

wonders what people thought of Gateway Computers?  I would like to hear
from anyone that has gotten a PII 266 or higher.

How compatable are they when you add video cards, etc.  How many open
slots to they have?  Are the SCSI or EIDE?

Thanks

I have had a Gateway P2-266 for several months now and have had ZERO
problems.  Running N2 was one of my first actions and it was nearly
flawless!  What a change from the 486-66 I had been running.  Max out the
graphics and let 'er fly!!

No problems with add-ins either.  I have four open slots.

Tom,
Gateway's are a super system for the average Joe, that said, stay away
from them. They use proprietary componants and industry standard parts
cannot always be used. I tend to groan everytime I open one up for a
client. If you are committed to mail order I would look and compare
prices of Dell and Micron. All standard parts and a reputaion for
building good machines. I built my own P2 but I would own either of
their 266's in a heartbeat, no question.
        All the best, Mike Davis

While I'm quite happy with MY gateway 2000, id recomend a Dell assuming
the price diff. isnt that much... when I bought my system the price
diff. between dell and gateway 2000 way SCARY! it truely made me
scared... I havent checked the market at all recently but dont spend
much extra on dell. While dells are a little better than Gateways, there
not THAT much better.  Note: ask if u cant get no vid card and go out
and buy a Pure3D the day b4 it comes...

I'm interested to hear that Dell parts are industry-standard now. They certainly
weren't 2 yrs ago when I bought my Dell 133 - the stupid motherboard is
proprietary and cant be replaced.

We have a gateway 2000 that we bought in 1994, and is the one we use
today..We are getitng a new one, but thisa computer has never crashed on
its own..always hrelp from me..
I recomend before buying one, going to www.gateway.com
and I forgot how, but there is a way to take a basic model, put on
something, or take of something, then it computes your price, so
basicvally, you get to build a computer.  Fun, and it helps!

Where the heck did he get the idea that Gateway 2000 uses proprietary components??
I've had 4 personal systems and over 20 company computers, all from Gateway 2000, and
they all worked fine and NO PROPRIETARY components...  unless, he's referring to PCI
being proprietary?  or maybe ISA?  howabout EISA? or SCSI? or IDE? or EIDE? or Super
VGA?  oh, maybe he means RS232 is proprietary...? or PS2?

 yada yada yada...

Have you checked your Bio-Rhythms?  Because you are having some seriously
bad luck.  I just bought a Gateway G6-300, my third Gateway system in seven
years.  I have never had a SINGLE problem.  My company also uses Gateways.
We probably have several hundred in house and I have heard of very few
problems.  So, in so many words, I guess I'm saying its fine to BUY
GATEWAY.

Always falls to the beck and call of the customer?  Well it appears in this
post all your doing is trying to prove him wrong, rather than saying "Sorry
sir - Im terribly sorry this has befallen you, hopefully this can be worked
out, and if you have anymore problems please feel free to write/call to
"etc"."  You guys need to learn how to Shmooooooze customers more. :)

Though I have been buying Gateways for my University and have been quite pleased
with them, I recently bought four ***max machines and like them better.  They
are cheaper and use excellent parts.  What's more, when I didn't like the
resolution on one of the monitors, they airshiped me a new one, and paid to ship
the old one back.  I bought four and have been very pleased.  I like the Gateway
Vivitron monitors (trinitron) better for games though, especially their 21".  By
the way, I have not found proprietary parts on the Gateways we have owned (about
15)

prefer) that i changed in about five minutes worth of time.
