ACT Labs Force RS: Any good?

by BPatter3 » Sun, 01 Nov 1998 04:00:00

I'm driving a Thrustmaster Nascar pro and I'm upset with the cheapness of it.
Is the ACT Labs FRS any better and is it worth the money?  Any info would be
appreciated.

The Nascar Pro is a pretty good wheel, but if your looking for something
built more solid, then you should check out the TSW line of wheels. I
upgraded from my Thrustmaster T2 to the TSW2, and have been very pleased.
Saved me some money over the stock TSW, without crunching my wallett too
bad. I have had the TSW2 since April, and it is solid as a rock. Very good
quality wheel.

If you don't mind me asking, exactly how much was it to upgrade?  I've thought
about a TSW, but for $300+ it better come with a real car. <g>

The TSW2 will run you 220.00.
To get the upgrade wiring, switch, and clutch assembly, would probably run
another 160 bucks or so, if and when I decide to do that. The neat thing is
I can add these items 1 at a time as I can.

I tried the Force RS for the first time this weekend.  It's totally
worth the
money.  The wheel produces plenty of smooth force.  My prior wheel was a
TM GP1, and there was no comparison.  I'll try to do a complete review
in
the next day or two.

% I cancelled my Force RS order and bought a Microsoft Sidewinder FF wheel today
% for $169 at Costco.  It uses an optical encoder so there's no steering pot to
% wear out.  It also seems to be much better made.  I suspect Act Labs will be
% out of business unless they can make enough money on their joysticks.
% Microsoft, Logitech, Thrustmaster, etc. are going to have their lunch in the
% wheel market and Act Labs doesn't know how to run a business.  My advice is to
% buy the MS wheel or wait a few weeks and check out the Logitech, TM, etc.

It looks like TM's FF wheel should be availabe at Best Buy and CompUSA
around Thanksgiving.  I've had the chance to look at MS's wheel and
TM's, and I think TM's design and feel may be worth waiting for.
