Midtown Madness: Screen jerk/Freeze

by capt_t.. » Thu, 30 Mar 2000 04:00:00

Hello again-

I have recently installed the latest Midtown patch so I could run the
game with my Creative Labs GeForce DDR.  The original problem of the
weird sky and strange lines is gone now, the graphics look great.  So
now on to problem 2.  Often the game freezes or jerks.  I think it
might have something to do with the new resolutions I added to the
config file because it is worse in the added resolutions than the ones
that it was originally configured for (although it does happen to a
lesser degree in 640x480) I have the latest CL drivers installed.  Any
ideas about how to resolve this?  Thanks.

Midtown Madness: Screen jerk/Freeze

I recently purchased Midtown madness and experience the same problem with
jerking pauses freezes ecetra.

I searched dejanews to see if there was a solution to the problem.  It seems
some people get the problem, others don't and no one is sure what the cause is.

Many of the responses I found indicated that the pauses were caused if you
didn't have enough memory.  I have 128 MB and borrowed 128 MB from a friend to
see if it would help.  With the 256 MB the problem improved very very slightly,
but it was still a problem.

I found that if I ran freemem (www.meikel.com/freemem shareware), prior to
running the game, I could get one good race with very little pausing.  However,
I have to quit the game and run the freemem to free up memory and re-start
every time I want to race again.

It is a very fun game, but I just found it to be too much of a hassle to
minimize the stuttering, so I haven't been playing the game.

I have a 366 Celeron overclocked to 550, 128 MB and a TNT2 Ultra.

Good luck with your problem, and if you find a solution please let me know.

Paul.

I have had Midtown Madness since it was released. I started out with a
Celeron 300 with 64mb and 2 Voodoo2's in SLI, and I now have a PIII 500
128mb ram with same Voodoo2's. I have always had the stuttering problem. I
was told in the newsgroups that I needed 256mb ram, which seems
unbelieveable considering all the rave reviews that this game had about
graphics, sense of speed, etc. Anyway, I tested it out at work on a 256mb
PII 450 with TNT2 and it still had the stuttering, so I finally gave up
trying to get this game to work. I had people e-mail me that they had no
problems with P233mmx and 64mb with Voodoo 1 so who knows. All I know is I
tried it out on 3 different configurations and always had the stuttering
problem. Too bad this was never addressed because the game could have been
fun, but the stuttering just made it unplayable as it would actually come to
a grinding halt right in the middle of a race and the next thing I know I'm
crahsed into a building.

Yup, and the sad thing is that I do have 256 MB ram on a PIII 733.  So
I don't think the problem stems from that either.  Also, I used to run
it fine on a PII 400 with 128MB and a TNT2.  Well, there's always hope
for MM2 I guess.

Thanks

Don, I have seen the game run great on slow machines, the way they
did it was to pick a res level they could turn up to the max(800x600 or
640x480)
and it ran better than running at the same res with the detail turned way.
Don't
know why but it worked, swap file config, also seemed to help as well.
I never had the problem on my system so it was hard to isolate for others.

For me, it turned out to be my older soundcard, Turtle Beach Montego, a
Vortex 1 card.  I replaced that with a SB Live Platinum and it is
butter smooth now.  I couldnt believe the difference in my computer.
It was like a CPU upgrade.  I have a Celeron 300a o/c to 450, 128 megs
RAM, so it was never the system lacking power.  I understand that the
Montego would use up to 30% of the CPU where the SB Live only uses 2 or
3%.
