That's odd, in an AI race the both Brabhams always got the front row.

Not to mention that the FIA boys wanted the Elkhart folks to do about $5M
dollars of reworking to the track to make it safe for F1. When told that
they would have to remove the entire hill at turn, ah ah , 11 or 12 I think,
the Elkhart folks made the right choise and said no thank you. . .

It's weird...but at all of the tracks, I'm always faster in the
Brabham...you know, Mario Andretti basically used the same car that year...

Yes John...

GIVE US ELKHART!!! That is a great circuit, not to mention it is an hour
from my house... but it is also TOTALLY in the spirit of the times. The
track existed then and it is really the Spa of North America...

Don... this is another intersting point about Road America... from what
I understand, many of the European tracks (Hockenheim I think is one)
are in the middle of nowhere, so to speak. I totally don't buy that
argument, at least according to a friend who has been to many of the
European circuits. The distance from a major "city or airport" is just a
load of Bernie's crap, because his definition doesn't make sense when
putting European tracks up to that same criteria.

Hockenheim is, so to speak, an extra runway of the Frankfurt Airport,
as it is located approx. 30 miles (or less) south of it, with an
Autobahn connecting both directly. The VIPs hop over with a
helicopter, of course.
I don't think there is a race track anywhere which is "closer" to a
major airport. Even the post-race parties are said to be held in a the
"Dorian Gray" Disco at Rhein-Main-Airport.
The Nrburgring, on the other hand, was purposedly build in the  Eifel
mountains to bring job opportunities into this formerly poor deserted
region. The distance to the next airports (Frankfurt or Cologne/Bonn)
is maybe 4 times bigger, but on smaller roads or less direct
Autobahns.

Hi Matt,

Thanks for the info.... I need to call my friend to see which are the
"middle of nowhere" tracks... obviously I erred on Hockenheim.

But am I right in saying Bernie's argument doesn't fly in respect to
Elhart Lake and other Euro tracks? (most of us know that Bernie's #1
motive is $$)

Hey Dave!

Magny-Cours is allegedly not far from the middle of nowhere. I've never
been myself but a friend who has says it's a nightmare. Also I don't
think the A1-Ring is close to any major cities or airports.

I agree, Elkhart Lake would be awesome.  Watching the CART racing there each
year kicks ass!.  Plus, I know the track better than the others since it iis
only a 20min ride from where I live.

I agree, but make sure it is the "old" course. That was a ***. I
drove it myself in the 60's in a TR-3 in SCCA amateur racing. When I gave
SCCA another go in the mid 70's in an RX-4, I was surprised at how much
wider and safer it had become.  If anyone who has been there remembers the
little asphalt road that winds around to different parts of the track, that
is the old race course. If you left the track you were usually in the woods.
Not many guardrails and no traps to keep you inside the circuit.  Definitely
a classic. The old Can-Am series was the last "big-time" series to use the
old course if my memory serves me correctly. Kinda giving my age away with
this one.........:-) I believe the new course was opened in the early 70s,
possibly late 60s when I was in the military. I know it was still there in
'67 when I ran my last race on it.  On the old course, in the TR, an average
speed of 50+ mph was my goal for a good lap. And that is when running
115-120 down the 2 main straights(Can-Ams 160+mph). GPL would be a killer on
that course.
Just a bit of trivia for you Badgers out there. Does anyone remember the
name of the "other" road course  that a divided highway cut right through
and closed?  You have to be close to 50 to remember this one unless your dad
took you there when you were very young. It was beginning to rival Road
America when it was forced to close when the highway was built. C'mon old
farts, dig into that memory. Hint:....You can still see the remnants of the
track on the side of the highway that closed it about an hr out of
Milwaukee.

Regards,
Ed Medlin
