Hi,

What harware are people using to run this game well?  I'm running the
patch "cmr-european.exe" from the codemasters site, and with full
graphics it runs perfectly smooth until there's a lot of trees on the
screen.  For instance on the first stage on Indonesia even with the
graphics on minimum it's not smooth (and the textures look awful and the
pop-up is bad, although I think it's bad even with full draw distance.)

I guess you'll say ditch the old voodoo, but I can't afford much else
right now and it runs my other games fine.  (btw CMR doesn't like my
i740 at all - just give a white screen.)

Thanks very much for any help.

Here's my specs:

Celeron 300A OC 450
128MB RAM
Asus P2B
Orchid Voodoo1 4MB (11/14/98 3Dfx ref drivers)
i740 8MB SGRAM (latest intel drivers)

Hi!

My Setup:
Tyan Trinity MB, K6-2/400, 128 MB SDRAM, Elsa Erazor II (Riva TNT) AGP w/ 16
MB SGRAM.
Perfectly smooth on 800x600 w/ full graphics detail and full draw distance.
I have also an old Voodoo 1 installed (for GPL, which HATES my Erazor ;-)).
With it, CMR runs also very smooth, but only in 640x480.
Maybe you should switch to the lower res (512x384) which doesn't look that
bad, but gives you an extra amount of speed. With my former machine, a P166,
CMR ran nicely in that res.

The ONLY thing that will remedy this, is setting the Object level of detail
from High to Low. This means fewer objects will be drawn. The quality will
be the same (well, quality... the tracks which gave me framerate problems
(Indonesia and one Britain track) don't look good at all: far too much
repetitive pixelated trees!!!) I had serious framerate drops too, but not
anymore! Don't think the game won't look as good on Low: it still looks
brilliant! You will hardly see the difference; it seems only the amount of
trees and bushes drawn is influenced (like in Indonesia). BTW: seeing less
trees, means there ARE less trees... less trees to bump into! So this option
may even improve your lap times :-)

Have to say not a bother on my PII 450 with 16Mb TNT card. The game flies
along at 800 x 600 with everything turned to max. Awesome when coupled with
the MS FF wheel :o)

I also have it running on my sons PII 266 with V2 where it's fine and the
works PII 266 with V1 where I run 640 x 480 and again it seems to run OK.

However, one thing we have done on all machines is turn off the awful on HUD
& just left the co-driver visuals. Also, everyone seems to have settled on
the 'tip of the bonnet' view as being the preferred option.

Hi, thanks for the info.  Well it's interesting that you get good
framerates with a Voodoo1 and a similar CPU power at 640x480.  Do you
run full details/draw distance/etc?  Is it still perfectly smooth on
Indonesia Stage 1 through the trees?  Someone suggested turning object
level of detail to low which works for me, which setting do you run?

Aaron

Thanks very much for the tip!  Much smoother now, and looks just as good
(although as you say it's not great anyway - it's the pop-up that gets
me...)  Well it's very playable, but I guess if I wanted perfect
smoothness I'd have to u/g my vid card.  I'm thinking of getting a V2
anyway, now V3 is here perhaps I can afford one...

Thanks, Aaron

As you would expect I suppose.  The CPU is fairly irrelavant for me as
the Voodoo1 is way passed maxed out anyway.  But I'm sure the TNT is a
great way of ensuring good framerates...

Interesting.  What settings do you run on the V1?  Especially "object
detail level" for smooth FPS on Indonesia Stage 1?

Yes I turned off the HUD straight away and I run the minimal display
w/just co-driver.  My preferred view is the one with the bonnet visible
in the foreground - is this the one you mean?
