NASCAR close ratio gearing 3/4 recommended?

I tried that for a while, but eventually realized I was consistently
getting much better race laptimes (not to mention fuel mileage) with a
setup that allowed for 4th gear all the way around (obviously we're
not talking about Watkins Glen or Sears Point here).  In other words
for me personally, the need to downshift to third is indicative of a
setup in need of work - it almost always slows the car down rather
than speed it up, even when the ratios on 3rd and 4th are very close.
There are exceptions to that of course - Bristol in particular is the
one that comes to mind.  Could be just the way I'm driving too...

If you have the expansion track pack, I think that Pocono requires you to
shift to third gear as you enter the first slowest corner. I haven't
practiced much at pocono but the manual says that you go down the short
straight in third gear.

The real-life guys do this.  They use a Jericho transmission at Pocono
and shift between 3rd and 4th at the turn.

I downshift to 1 (ONE) at Martinsville, down to 3 at Bristol, Rockingham, etc.
I find that I get a better accleration though the middle and out of the turn.
You have to slow down for the corners anyway, so what's a downshift going to
do anyway?  Besides, at Martinsville and Bristol, tires wear out faster than
fuel and a lighter car is a faster car.
