Having trouble connecting to servers

I couldn't connect to a GPL host either until I got ping times down. Had
to change from a 56k modem to a 33.6 that would give less than 300ms
ping.

To check ping go to a dos box, type 'ping' followed by the IP address of
the host. Must get no time outs and an average of less than 400ms.

The GPL host will reject your connection if pings are too high.

Having trouble connecting to servers

Hello Ed,

The server needs the same core.ini as you.  I was able to connect to
Tim's server fine and only have 1 entry in the core.ini file pertaining
to cable modems.  Your core.ini is refering to packet frequency
and size -- two very important items.  My suggestion is to remove
the "net_mdm" lines.

Jason.

So what statements do you have in your core.ini?
Not sure that's the problem anyway. I get the same results with all lines
but assumed_connect_speed remmed out, and without the core.ini file at all.

Hi Ed,

I can't tell you my core.ini settings -- because I browse this newsgroup
from work  *shhhhhh*  don't tell anyone ;)

In the GPL/README file it talks about how to setup a cable-modem
using the core.ini file --- This is not recommended for modem users
as it will cause GPL to dial your ISP everytime you start it.

You could try to PING the hosts' IP address before connecting.
If the ping is above 250ms that would give you a 500ms latency -- not
too good.  Of course, the lower the better.

If your from Western North America, Tim McArther's server at
24.1.24.139 (or my server -- not up at the moment) should be
good choices to try.

Jason.

Go to http://members.xoom.com/TeamCanAm/ ; click News; and grab either
the core-cable.ini or core.dialup.ini. That MIGHT help. I have cable
so I rarely have discoes anyway. Don't know if Tim is using it but he
likely is. Note that it's the same as the one on Alison Hine's site.

Hi Ed,

Now that I'm home I can tell you my core.ini file.  It's for
a cable-modem.  BTW: I get around 111ms to 222ms latency
to Tim's and Todd's servers -- The lower the latency the
better.

======
[Communications]
alternate_ip_addr_lookup = 1
======

That's it -- but remember, dialup modems should not use this or
GPL will dial the internet everytime you start the game.

Jason.
