That's it.  On the T1, which is for driving sims, there are just
wheels that roll.  I think what you saw on the WWW site was the
Thrustmaster Rudder Control system.  Those are actual pedals instead
of the wheels.

Right again.  You push the stick up to shift up and down to shift
down.  It sounds simple, but it is effective.  Also, I don't think an
actual h-pattern gear shifter would last very long.  The more
movement, the more tendency to break.

If you are really into racing sims, you'll wonder how you ever
completed a race without it.  It's the difference in driving a Pinto
(no offense to Pinto owners) and a Corvette.  It's also the difference
between winning races and realistically enjoying the game, or setting
your opponent strengths to 90% and still struggling.  If you REALLY
love the game, buy the T1.

You're welcome

I had my hands on a T1 today, but I hesitated at buying it.  I'm not sure it
was of the later manufacturing.  Mainly, it was due to the pedals.  They were
basically rollers/wheels on a spindle.  As you push the spindle down, the
wheels roll against your feet for the resistance.  Is this the latest model?
The reason I ask is that I saw a very detailed picture of the T1 on their WWW
site, and the foot pedals LOOKED a lot different.  They were actually a pedal
that you pressed DOWN on.  Any info is appreciated.

Finally, the gear shifter hardly moved at all.  The salesperson explained to
me that it was more of a high/low type gear, not 1,2,3, and 4th.  In other
words, pressing UP changed gears higher and pulling DOWN changed them lower.
Again, is this right?  I just want to be sure before I spend my $130 for
a luxury play item!

Thanks to all for the past help and to future responses....

Another factor is that on a real IndyCar, the gear shifting is sequential,
just like a motorcycle, i.e. pushing forward upshifts and pulling towards
you downshifts. I suspect it would be quite difficult to find gears when
one is blasting along the way these cars do!

I was hesitant when I first bought my T1 also.  However, I roller-
pedals do work VERY well.  Also, the gear shifter is more like a
sequential gear shifter every time you push forward you go up 1
gear and wevery time you push down a gear you go down 1 gear.
the system is very good, and it sure beats anything else, in my opinion.

In some (most?) of the latest Indycars (F1 picked it up a while earlier,
correct me if i'm wrong) the shift levers only move back and forth. Actually,
pushing forward downshifted while pulling back upshifts. It's quicker than
having to find a gate for the right gear, specially on a short-throw.

I found that the gear shifter would not come back to center and constantly
hit the back switch.  I had to loosen the screws underneath and remove the
*** grommet.  But it works fine now.  Also I noticed that the steering
wheel's hole would not go over the shaft.  Too much flash.  Had to use
a small grinding wheel on my drill press to grind out enough *** so it
would fit.  But it worked fine afterwards.
