GrIP interferes with Modem.

by Andrew Carrol » Tue, 17 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I seem to be experiencing a very strange problem, which is obviously due
to a conflict between my Gravis GrIP system and my Modem, but I'm unsure
as to how I can fix it.

Last week I noticed that my web speed had gotten considerably slower.  I
was unable to get anything more than 1.5K a second on downloads and web
pages were taking forever to load.  At first I thought it was a driver
problem (as I had recently updated my modem driver), but the problem
continued when I used the older driver again.  I also removed my COM
ports, modem etc from the device manager and let Win95 auto detect them
and reinstall them.
However, none of these fixed the problem, so I thought it might be my
ISP.  However, no one else was experiencing the problem.

I then used System Monitor to see exactly what was happening.
Immediately I could see that the number of CRC errors and Overrun errors
was rising sharply.

After two days of trying to fix the problem I suddenly noticed that it
disappeared when I was using my GrIP system in pass-through mode.  I
switched it back to GrIP mode and the problem reappeared.  I did this a
few times just to check it wasn't a coincedence.  It seems that when my
GrIP system is operating is GrIP mode the communication with my modem is
affected.  However, if it's in pass-through mode then there is no
problem.

Does anyone have any idea why this is happening, and if so, any idea how
to resolve it ?

Many thanks

Andrew

Well, I have 2 Gravis Gamepad Pros hooked to a Joyswitch and my GRIP
drivers are running all of the time.  I have noticed about 1.0-2.0KBs
transfer rates in IE4.0 or WS FTP (Usually 3.2).  Is this the GRIP
system you are referring to?  Or is there another piece of Hardware?

GrIP interferes with Modem.

I have the actual GrIP system, which consists of 2 pads and a central
hub.
However, if you are experiencing similar problems using the Gamepad Pros
then maybe it's the drivers that are causing the problems.

I assume that the drivers we are using are the same.

Hopefully if we hear from more people, the problem might be more
obvious.
It might be worth contacting Gravis about this.

Maybe you could try disabling the GrIP drivers and see if anything
changes.  Also, try and take a look at the System Monitor and see if you
are getting CRC and Overrun errors.

Thanks

Andrew

GrIP interferes with Modem.

Andrew, I've got the same GrIP system, and while I haven't noticed a
difference when using either of 2 modems I'll test downloads using GrIp and
then pass-thru modes and let you know if it effects me as well.

GrIP interferes with Modem.

by Tim Tschirne » Tue, 17 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

it's most likely the GrIP Drivers. If you click on the small GrIP
Icon in the Taskbar, you'll see a button labelled "Advanced".
Click on it and move the slider to the rightmost position to change
the timecycle during which the GrIP system is queried.
This has cured the problem here, but it's still annoying since you
can't play any games via a Modem Connection.

I notified Gravis of this problem, but they had no cure for it.
