Are these one and the same track? I haven't been able to pinpoint their
locations, but they are suspiciously similar in layout.

I believe the A1-Ring was built over top of the old Osterreichring. It seems
to me that all they did was make all the faster corners tighter to slow the
cars down.

The Osterreichring was the old circuit from around the 70's.
The A1 version was opened for F1 in 1997 and is the same track just
re-developed and laid out into a more modern track.

The A1 Ring is the modern, "dumbed down" version of the Osterreichring. F1
last visited the longer Osterreichring in 1987 when I believe the fastest
ever avg. lap speed was recorded in qualifying. The record still stands(?)

Did you ever hear of Nordschleife and Nurburgring ?

It's excalty the same with A1, the OLD osterreichring went for 7 or 8 km,
then was shrunk to about 5 for the "modern" (late 60's) F1, then was
abandoned in 83 or 85 I think after they had to make 3 starts in a F1 race,
the start and finish straight was so narrow that it was worse than STe
dvote in Monaco or the start in PAU.

visit the official site at www.a1.com, they have plenty of info.

Besides that the track of today in VERY nice, and the organization there is
just PERFECT.

Fastest average speed for a Formula One qualifying lap was and still is Keke
Rosberg in the Williams - Honda at Silverstone in 1985.  The only Grand Prix
Driver ever to average over 160mph for a lap.

By 1987 Silverstone had been slowed down quite a bit so I would hazard a
guess that Osterreichring was the fastest circuit that season.

Fastest ever was Rosberg at Silverstone '85 I think. Somewhere around
160mph.
