F1C - How to gain 20 FPS!!!

by Richard S Becket » Fri, 24 Oct 2003 21:25:02

Well, I promised to reveal all, so here it is...

I have released a new program called "F1C file editor V2".

It is available here:
http://www.racesimcentral.net/%20_File_ed...

This new version is much improved and:
Allows editing of controller axes.
Allows editing of Head Physics parameters.
Allows driver's arms to be turned off/on at a single click.
Allows editing of all force feedback parameters.
Allows editing of the number of qualifying laps for all seasons.
Allows editing of the number of points for finishing positions for all
seasons.
Has an updated help file.
Is much quicker than V1.
Looks quite nice.

In the help files, you will find instructions on how to gain that extra 20
FPS.

Here's how:

I have only tested this with my MSFF gameport wheel, as it's all I have.
Please try these settings with different wheels and let me know how they
work. Also, if you have to experiment with different wheels, and come up
with settings that work better, please send them to me for inclusion in the
help file. My email address is shown in the "Help -> About" window of the
program.

There are three vibration settings, that cause a vibration of the wheel. One
varies with engine revs, one varies with forward speed, and one comes on
under braking. By turning these vibrations off, as I found them annoying
anyway, I got a 20 FPS increase!

They are:
"FFB steer vibe freq mult", "FFB throttle vibe mult" and "FFB brake vibe
mult", and I simply set them to 0 to turn them off.

Richard,
If you turn these three vibrations off, do you have any force feedback left?

I made the changes, but unfortunately the fps stayed the same. I'm using the
Ferrari ff wheel. Maybe the changes just don't help with this wheel?

Same with me on a Momo.  Same fps, but loss of some feel in the wheel.

The problem with MS' approach is that they acknowledge all things sent
to the wheel. So for an FF change, you send something, wait for ACK to
return... Not fast ofcourse.
So turning off FF for a moment will reveal what your machine can
REALLY do.

The funny thing about DirectInput on the other hand is that it directs
you to use multiple separate effects, that all run on the hardware
(say a triangle function for a kerb, a noise for road noise, and a
'constant' force, which is really variable, for the steering
feedback).
By that paradigm, you'll have to update all the changes to the wheel,
for each effect. Meaning you quickly go overboard with lots and lots
of communication. I now choose to do all FF on the CPU, and use only a
constant force (even for kerb effects). Haven't tested for any FPS
increase though, but it was the sane thing to do, esp. since it was
easier to control a simpler wheel that way (which has only 1 effect, a
constant force).

Phooey - that won't help some of us.  I didn't realize you were referring to FF
before.
