Now we've turned this into the Newbie Warez Hangout. Kewl d00d!!
I think we've lost ALL credibility if someone comes in here asking for warez
for every game out from now on, and if so, we brought it on ourselves. I
can sorta buy the "testing the game out" bit, and won't say I've never done
it. I did look for GPL knowing I was going to buy it anyways, but wasn't
successful, and have "tested" some of those titles that the powers that be
decided wouldn't ship to the US or would do so 6 months down the road. If
I'm going to pay to import a game, yeah, I'm going to try it out.
BUT.....
Posting *links* and openly discussing the warez of a game on a "regular"
newsgroup like this is just not done. We can't really flame someone looking
for warez GPL, can we? It can be hard to find legitimately these days, and
while it does have a demo, they can't really test whether their machine can
handle a full-field of AI or whether the OpenGL hack works adequately with
their card or how their machine handles online play at the 'Ring, etc. Or
getting a Noonan converter, to test out a particular track that isn't in the
demo version. Yep, that's a stretch - but not that much more than many of
the reasons we've heard from people downloading the F12K "demo".
Most everyone wasn't going to buy an EA racing sim the first day of release
anyways. One could conceivably wait a couple of weeks and hear some user
experiences and then decide if they want to take a chance on the game -
there's nothing that says you have to buy something the instant it hits the
shelves. Everyone has GPL on their drive, and can continue to play that for
a bit longer while we get word of mouth on the next new game. I mean, we're
going to slam whatever comes out as not being that good, so we'll go back to
playing GPL since it's the only real sim out there anyways, right? Yet a
sim - from EA Sports of all people - hits the warez circuit and to read the
newsgroup over the last several days you'd think that someone at Papy had le
aked out a CART or NASCAR sim based on the GPL engine.
I'm not saying don't download a game and try it out - that's up to you and
your conscience - but openly discussing stuff like this - and posting
*LINKS* for God's sake - doesn't look too good for the community at all,
IMHO. The developers of Grand Prix World left a forum where they had been
VERY active when people started posting warez links and the like. Some of
that was people hacking the sim to get unlicensed stuff in there as well, a
different situation - but the warez stuff was a factor. Hope we don't kill
off RAS as a place for developers as well....

-- People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realise
how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.
It's hard not to "sorta buy the testing the game out"-theory when marketing
bozo's (who wouldn't know an apex from a braking point) go on and on about
the "sim" content of a certain game and in the end deliver a sort of
in-between "thing", not pleasing to either arcade- or sim fans. As you
mentioned there's also an international release issue (I don't like when US
residents get a 3 month head start at a sim ;-)). Some developers (Bethesda
comes to mind) seem to ignore the European market as a whole, leaving no
alternative.
Warez has it's place, both for "try before you buy" and "disguising what
should have been in the original version as an upgrade"-situations, but
"getting the goods" shouldn't be a public matter.
Jan,

If I was a developer there is absolutely -NO WAY- that I would post anything
here again, following this current *** of dishonesty over F1-2000. The
activities, and advertising here of same, remind me of the behaviour of
looters.
As one who has been a regular "member" of RAS for many years I am ashamed of
the blatant displays of greed by people here. It makes me wonder how honest
you are in other aspects of your lives. Sad indeed.
