Want to help shape the Daytona Patch?

by Je » Sat, 16 Mar 1996 04:00:00

All,
The actual setting up of scenery in the Daytona patch is almost
complete.

However, I need to find a few details out before I can finish it.

1) What is Daytona sufaced with? From pictures I've seen it looks like
concrete. Is this true or is it just sun bleached tarmac?

2) Whats the lap record at Daytona?

3) Whats the average race speed?

4) With regards to racing, anybody got any ideas what speed each
corner is?

5) What is grip like incomparison to Talladega, better ot worse and by
how much?

6) Whats tyre wear like at Daytona in comparison to Talladega?

7) Do cars all run around single file and if not, how many wide do
they run? How much speed is lost by running high/low? Where is the
most passing done at Daytona?

asphalt...

They are currently qualifying at 195 mph approx.

depends on cautions..but the race record is 177 mph

I would think 10-15 mph less than max...if average is 195 then 205-210
for straightaways and 175-185 for corners approx

i think a bit less..but not by much..

i believe it to be very similiar

this year the cars were racing 2 wide with ease and sometimes 3 wide.

I hope this helps Jed... Any comments on my point anybody.

>>2) Whats the lap record at Daytona?

>They are currently qualifying at 195 mph approx.

Nope.  With this year's engine restrictions, the pole speed for the 500
was 189+.  In fact, since the institution of the restrictor plate, I think
there's only been one Daytona 500 where the pole speed was above 195 mph.
The July race speeds are always lower because A) the engines don't make as
much HP in hot and humid weather and B) the track is hotter and, therefore,
slicker.

Incidently, the qualifying record is 210.364 mph, set by Bill Elliott in
February of 1987 (obviously, before the restrictor plate).

Yep, held by Buddy Baker, 1980.

Nah.  This year the trap speeds indicated about 193-195 mph going into the
corners, 188-190 mph coming off the corners.

Correct.  Although, Daytona is EXTREMELY slick in July, and this affects
handling more at Daytona than at Talladega.

Similar.  However, I believe the tire wear at Talladega (in the sim) is a
little excessive right now.

Yep.  Even on a track that's one lane narrower than Talladega, a fact that
many people don't realize.

  Asphalt..

Not sure of the exact speed but probably around 190-194 range.

Usually with a few cautions the average speed ends up around 170-175
range..

Its fairly constant all the way around the track now. Might lose a
couple mph.

About the same. A bit steeper banking.

Have no idea..I would imagine on a hot day tires would wear away alot
faster.

When not alot of passing is going on they usually all slide into a
single fiel and draft. After a while they break up into packs of 7 or
so cars and are spread around the track. When they all start passing,
it gets 2 or 3 cars wide. If they get adventurous they will try wider..

not to intrude since I dont have Nascar but have you considered checking
out some Nascar videos from video stores and libraries. Listen the announcers
and such to get more info then you'll need. Your past posts seem to indicate
you only have pictures of the track.
