SPECIAL CARDS FOR WHEELS????

by Erik van Duij » Sat, 31 Oct 1998 04:00:00

Hi,

I am the owner of the well known T2-wheel (Thrustmaster) and have heard
of a card to put in your pc and to connect the T2 to. This would make
the drivin' more precise and enjoyable. Can anyone of you confirm that
and how expensive is it. At the moment my T2 is connected to my
soundblaster's gameport. I do find the steering hard (I must admit I
prefer the keyboard when it comes to the need to steer precisely,
especially with games like Grandprix2).

I answer all your questions there. Hmm.. will check my page to see if I
mentioned it (pretty sure the PDPI-Home page does...).. if not, I'll make

That's too bad, only an ISA version.  Lost my sale....I was getting ready to
order it just now.

The PDPI card is an ISA card. No immediate plans on a pci version from what I was told.

SPECIAL CARDS FOR WHEELS????

I dont know if this is true, but according to a review in last weeks issue of
GameWeek (a trade magazine), the card doesnt support ForceFeedback (???)

Anyone know if this is so?

Here's a clipping of an email I received from Mike Pelkey of PDPI
(concerning specifically the ACT Labs RS FF wheel):

"The FF wheel from ACT Labs connects through a serial port.  It should work
perfectly with the L4.  I'll know more about this after I receive it from
them over the next couple of days."

Mike scans the group every few days, so I'm sure he'll post a full reply in
the next week(if not, I'll find out, and will do so).

So I'd hold off for a few more days, until I can give you a *definite*
answer. Wish I could be of more help.

Actually I think the article mentioned something about the Microsoft FF Wheel
in particular.  Other than that, they had nothing but good things to say about
it.

Hopefully they will clear the air about that issue and get a PCI version
released.

There are various routes to take if you feel that your soundcards
gameport isn't up to speed.  I am happy with Thrustmaster's ACM
game controller card.  It is adjustable for your computer speed.  If you
have Thrustmaster's TMScope program, run this and report your range
numbers for the various axes of the T2.  The range should show some
indication of the quality of your soundcard's gameport.

One other thing to consider, is that you should turn off any steering
aides you may have used for keyboard.  Also look at your steering lock,
you may need to alter this for wheel use.  Another thing to think about
is the overall setup of the car.  It may be optimized for keyboard
input, but may need tweaking for you now drive with a wheel.
