i am thinking of buying an AMD k6-2 450 to replace my rather pathetic cyrix
233mmx which on opening the case looks like two hamsters with a calculator,
in breif its SLOW in gpl! IS the amd 450 a good chip for gpl considering its
price compared to intel p2 450 chips.
I know everyones gonna go buy a celery 300a and o/c it to 450 and its fast
but i dont want to o/c the sytem cuz if i cook it i will not be able to work
cuz i use my pc for work and also wouldnt be able to afford to replace it.
is the amd good for other aplications too such as graphics, etc.

please help,!
also what ram should i get amount and type

Hi, Jay --

I asked a very similar question of the group a couple of weeks ago, and
would be happy to send the the thoughtful replies I got if you like.

It makes a difference whether you're intending to buy a new system on a
turn-key basis, you're intending to try and up-grade with some of your
current components, or building one from scratch.

With prices dropping as fast as they are on some of the Intel chips, you MAY
be able to get a better value that way.

Clarify just a bit (either here or in an e-mail to me) and I'll tell you
what I learned.

Regards,

Kurt Steinbock

The K6 2 is a very good, and in my experience faster in games than an intel
PII.
I've overclocked mine to around 600MHz, but it doesn't need it.  Anyone who
buys an Intel is wasting there money.  I run GPL using a Voodoo Banshee, and
it absoloutely flies!

The AMD K6-2 would be OK, but it would be much better on a K6-3.

Also, if you stick a Voodoo2 in there, you should notice a big
performance increase.

A friend of mine who owns a Pentium MMX 166MHz with 32MB of RAM gets
around 2fps in Software rendering, but reaches around 25fps with most
details (but not all) turned on, once he switched to 3Dfx with his
Voodoo2.

Anybody know if GPL is optimised for 3D-Now, as that would make quite
a big difference on the AMD's.

I highly doubt that GPL is optimized for 3d-Now...I don't think it's even

route, the 300a is out of production, and it's in short supply...

I have a p2 333 which is not o/c with 2 voodoo2 SLI and it runs solid
with all graphics options on in GPL.
I also have a p2 450 with a Voodoo3 3000 and I must say the difference
in frame rate is very slight, but with the voodoo 3 I can play at
1280x1024 resolution and it looks absolutely great. The colors also
tend to be more vivid with the voodoo3 although the TNT chip will
always gives you a better image (if we had proper drivers that is)
In my opinion if you're not thinking of overclocking, I would choose
either between the p2 333 and the p2 450 depending on how much cash
you have.  The AMD's are very good and getting better all the time,
but for us pc gamers, not even the intel processor is yet good enough
let alone the others, and the pentium 3 is a processor release I've
simply  ignored.
** A mate of mine runs GPL on AMD k6 and it runs solid but when GPL
puts the processor is under heavy use, the intel finishes ahead in
frame rates, we 've concluded.  Also if GPL is what you'll be playing
all the time, keep in mind that GPL is very demanding on your pc, to
be honest I have not come accross a sim so demanding.... You'll spend
a lot of money (I even bought a 19'' mon), and the best you'll ever
get out of gpl is 37fps, and it will never be constant on 36 or 37 if
other cars are around.

AND WE'RE STILL AWAITING FOR A PATCH.....

Nope, GPL aint 3DNow! optimised...... It'd be nice if GPL 1.1 was though..
