Actually, that rule still exists in modern F1. One has to have driven at
least 90% of the race distance in order to get qualified. On the one hand
this means that one doesn't get points is he has driven less laps,
even if he comes home anong the first six. On the other had, this means
that if less than six cars reach the chequered flag, the last car(s) that
dropped out will get the remaining points if they have driven 90% of the
race distance. This happened in Monaco in 1996 (the race that was won by
Panis; only three cars finished the race)
