Drivers:

WHAT ARE YOUR PING TIMES AND INTERNET PROVIDER!!!

I would like to start a string of your unnacceptable experiences
with different INTERNET providers for playing KALI and KAHN.

Personally I use ATT Worldnet for about 2 more hours before I
trash it.  I am located in Florida and it takes me almost
700ms to ping a local ISP.  I suspect that ATT gives me a local
line, but multiplexes me to the ISP in say New Jersey.  Well
that doesnt work to well for me and we may find that other large
nationwide carriers may have the problem.  So:

I have also been told that ATT has a firewall in thier system
that adds about 200ms.  We need to address these issues and
determine all the issues of latency...

Please report your ping times to www.wheretorace.com and what
Internet Service you are using..

Mine is ATT Worldnet and my ping time is over 700ms..

We may also find out that we have to fix this problem and it
may effect the playing of racing games on www.ten.net.

Latency is the racers enemy!!!!

I have found that:

http://www.racesimcentral.net/

has a complete set of great communications software for doing
traceroutes, whois, pings, etc in a package called ***kit...

That will be unplayable.

You said a mouthful there!!! :-)

My results (from Win95 DOS Box): (PPP dialing into a remote POP using
The Internet Access Company [and this is a 14.4 modem with a local
loop over two miles long...])
BLAH, BLAH, BLAH:> ping www.wheretorace.com

Pinging www.wheretorace.com [206.161.8.124] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 206.161.8.124: bytes=32 time=269ms TTL=241
Reply from 206.161.8.124: bytes=32 time=217ms TTL=241

Some of the providers here on the West-coast report ping-rates between
100-150ms...Go West young man!!  ;)

Pings to WTR are averaging 110-175ms during the last three weeks while
I've been connecting.

That's using an E3 (10Mb/sec) eternet connection on the UK's
"SuperJANET" network coming from Scotland.

Cheers!

Your respective ping times to the WTR server is not really a very good
gage of how good a connection you will have.  Kali (and Kahn for that
matter) does not route packets through the server once a game starts,
packets are only sent out to other packets in the game.   I think the
only thing sent back and forth to the server once the game starts is
some informational stuff that let the server keep track of you.  If
Kali sent all game packets through the server, not only would the
resulting traffic bring many of the servers to their knees, but I
think it would be pretty much impossible to ever get a playable game
in anything due to the increased latency added by sending everything
through the server.

Thanks for the info.  One question though.  I am guessing that when you
go to "private server mode", then no packets are sent to the WTR server.
Is this correct?  The guys I have raced have all used private server
mode and I'm guessing this is the reason!!??

This is true.  I suppose this would give you a slight bandwith
conservation advantage, but I don't think it's very much.  Still, when
your right on the edge of playability, every little bit helps...
