SCGT - hardware hog?

by Mark » Fri, 25 Jun 1999 04:00:00

Just played SCGT at the local computer store - was running on a PIII450,
128Mb, V3 (don't know 2K or 3K), with act labs FF.  Apart from not liking the
FF bit, I was horrified by the framerate - at 800x600 and 640x480 - going
down the pits straight at Lime Rock.  This was a practice session with no
other cars visible.  I'm sure my P200, V1 doesn't have such a hard time.
What the hell gives?

It was probably running in 'Software only' mode. When the game starts up,
you can select between 'Software', Direct 3D, or 3DFX mode.  If it was
running in Software mode, the FF was probably also affected as Software mode
will hog most of the CPU cycles.  Try it again in 3DFX mode..

That or it's a P3 problem/driver problem... ?  On my P2 450 it screams
under all conditions except night. night is a hog. But the rest rocks !

GReg.

PS: I took my 911 to the track and was amazed at how similar this felt
to driving a GTQ or GT3 in the game (of course the game's car is faster
than mine), but physics are pretty well done for the porsches, I'll
tell ya.

The framerate drops during practice when the pits are visible but during
qualifying and racing this is not a problem unless you qualify poorly.

OK, cheers.  I'll see how it runs -if- the p3 that's supposed to arrive today
does turn up...

Unfortunately, it was -definately- 3dfx mode - I shut it down and restarted
myself.  On the plus side though, it flies at other tracks.

Why ?  ;-)  Pretty much anywhere in the free world, you can buy a used
911 in good shape for $12000 or so. Don't you own a car in that price
range ?  Then it's just a matter of taste and of putting all your
savings in to maintenance ;-)

SOme FF implementations take up way too many clock cycles. The Logitech FF is by
far the most efficient and SCGT would probably of looked a lot smoother.

Sure, anywhere in the "free world" you can buy a 911 for $12K.  The problem
is, we're married!

Bastard...(still!!)
