Has anyone ever had a GOOD experience modem racing in GP2? I have tried
racing with 3 different people with many different configurations,
detail levels, etc., and all the same result! The modem play is slow and
awful. How bout you guys, had the same experience? Microprose could
certainly learn from ICR2 modem racing!

Yup,   had the same experience... slow as Hell, barely playable
unless i'm missing something in the settings i could do to improve the
situation.

Are you using the 'use16550' switch and a high baud rate?
If not specified it won't use it fully.

Actually I did not try this :-) OK this might be it, but I doubt it.
You have to wonder what this is not the default, as all current fast
modems have 16550's.

At 19200 try (both of you) setting graphics so that you get an estimate of
greater than 21 fps - ideally 25.6 or greater. Then set your actual FR to
between 12.1 (sounds low but actually feels quite good) and 16.0 -
depending upon your sys speeds. That should produce very playable speeds.
It's a good idea to time your laps and compare real time to sim time.
Obviously you want to get both as closely matched as possible; without
going under.
FYI I just have texture on the trackside objects and fences (cause I hit
them so much); maybe smoke in mirrors; and trackside objects on None -
which really means very few. I've a P120 32 meg (wish I hadn't gone for the
extra 16) with a 1 meg S3 Trio graphics card; and a USR 33.6.
It's a real shame that we have to sacrifice graphics for speed; and that
sim time isn't locked to real time. Still it's a great sim and I'm hopefull
that there will be a patch that fixes these things.

You know something? What does it say about a piece of software that
is advertised as H2H, but it really isn't? What does it say about
the company who advertises this? MPS had to know how *good* the GP2
h2h is. I do feel kind of lied to.

I tried this last night with a friend. GP2's modem play just plain sucks.
BADLY!!!! It was horrible. Those guys have not learned, or improved a darn
thing since GP1. The problem is probably that they do not use the 16550
UART by default. Which probably means that the same crappy modem code they
used for GP1 is in GP2. What loosers :-) In any event my friend & I played
ICR2 in svga for about 3 hours last night. COMMS were perfect. Framerate was
perfect. I expect MPS to fix this. I'll probably call them this week and find
out.

Another note. ICR2 isn't bad at all compared to GP2 :-)

We just got it working last night, after fiddling with COMSETUP and
modem init strings for a while. It worked fine for us! We were at 9600
baud, and had very smooth operation without any glitches. We may try the
19.2K setting next time to see how that changes things.

I don't know how this would effect game play, but we discovered that
it was very important to disable compression and flow control in order
to have the link remain stable. And we both used the 'use16550' option
when starting GP2.

My machine is a 486DX4/100 PCI, running in VGA, and the far end was a
P133 in SVGA. I don't recall what graphics settings were used as far as
details and textures go, but so far so good!

I would like to know how you are supposed to manage more than 9600 Baud on
a null modem link.. For Christ sake Microprose, give us IPX Network !!!

I just got mine going last night too after trying for about 4 weeks to
get it to work.I had the same problem crappy frame rate and stop &
start .This is now fixed ,DONT use there modem codes for US Rob 33.6
modem try this    AT&F&K0&M0&H1&R2&K3^M . This has error control off &
compression off also MNP5 disabled I also think CTS/RTS is on. Also
put the frame rate down to between 13-15 fps we are running in SVGA no
textures all obi on .Now the only problem we have when connected is
every time a CC car, or we crash out, or end up in the sand we get a
LINK DATA MISMATCH msg,and we have to leave the race to try to recover
the game, but when we race 2 cars only the play is fine.Basicly
compared to IC2  GP2's modem code is crap.
