GPL - Whoopee!!!

I think most drivers jump into car setup too soon.  First learn the track.
I have been driving Monza with the default Eagle setup and mininum fuel and
can manage low 29's during the race.  By "perfecting" (sort of) lines you
can get down to competitive times without having to monkey with the car.

After you understand the track, each change you make to the setup will be
more useful and give more meaningful feedback.

I gave up GPL for about 2 months because it was just too hard and
frustrating.

Because I had bought the game, I came back and checked VROC. Alison Hine had
posted a set of "user friendly" Coventry setups. I tried them and
immediately I could get around many tracks without disturbing too much
gravel and grass.

Most people have no clue what setup changes should be made until they have
learned a track. A chicken / egg situation. But if you find a forgiving
setup then you can start learning the tracks. Novices like me will get the
benefit of Alison's setup - but as you say, there is no point in
experimenting beyond this too early.

BINGO!!  I'm still having problems running Monza under 1:34.  However,
with the defult setup for the GLEN, I run an *unconstant* 1:08 laps.
(1:08.x, 1:09.x, 1:07.x, 1:09.x, ect) After running a few hundred laps I
was able to run *semi-constant* laps of 1:08.x (1:08.9, 1:08.7, 1:08.7,
1:08.7, 1:08.6, 1:08.5.  After some time with that setup I decided to
adjust just one item in the setup.  I not only felt (big time) what
difference it made but I was also able to increas that lap time to 1:07.
then I adjusted the same thing just one incroment again and jumped to a
lot of laps of 1:07.1xx.

Now, After understanding what each item does to the car, And knowing
the track, I run *constant* 1:06.12xs with a full tank of fuel. and that
drops down to a *constant* 1:05.4xx by lap 40.

<snip>

Actually, this works for the Lotus and the Brabham as well. I haven't
tried it on the other cars.
I renamed Alison's Coventry setup for Watkins Glen with a bb1
extension (ie Brabham) - and within 5 laps I am only 0.5 secs short of
my Lotus time. I'm only managing 106.5 in the Lotus - but I feel I'm
actually going to find it easier to get the Brabham's laptimes down.

Just as with the Lotus, at first I had found the Brabham extremely
difficult, and (in the Brabham's case) very slow. And I found braking
hard, or accelerating quickly, virtually impossible. But within 4 or 5
laps of using the coverted "Hine Special" setup, I found the Brabham
much much more drivable. I now hope to get competitive quickly with
the Brabham, so I can enter those "No Lotus" races :)

About a month ago I had the exact same experience with the Lotus: that
is, at first I found it very twitchy, hard to control, and prone to
spinning seemingly at random. This was, of course, mainly due to my
lack of skill and familiarity. But once I converted Alison's Coventry
setups to have LO1 extensions, suddenly I found the Lotus not only the
quickest car, but also the most stable and easiest to be consistent
in.

So for anyone who is still struggling with GPL after a few weeks
practice (as I was), it's really worth a try. For me, anyway, it has
made GPL immeasurably more enjoyable, because I am now competitive
online - not with the really quick guys, but there's usually someone
about my pace, and sometimes there's no-one quicker. (not that often i
have to admit ;)

And a huge thank you to Alison Hine - IMHO the ultimate setup goddess.

Yes, Al, Alison does a great job. But if you want good Brab setups
(IMHO), check mine out at the site below...

On the Ferrari too - I've recently been using Ian Lake's chassis
settings on my red car. With some modified gear ratios I've improved my
Ferrari laptimes a lot, going from 1m29.3 to 1m27.5 at Silverstone,
1m28.7 to 1m28.2 at Monza, 3m19.9 to 3m18.5 at Spa, and 1m05.6 to 1m04.6
at Watkins Glen.

(Sorry Roy, couldn't help mentioning the laptimes!)

Jeff,

Though I am a rookie I think yours is excellent advice. I was really
working on my Eagle setups for the longest time - obsessively - until
I realized that the biggest factor in my way of breaking 130 at Monza
was my driving. Now that I've finally done it I've pretty much
restored the default setups for all tracks (mainly changing roll bar
and camber/pressure) and my times haven't suffered.

After four months of frustrating fun things are coming together more
and more - instead of flying apart. Now all I've got to do is get very
consistent and THEN see if I can't tweak my setups. Hmmm. Maybe in
another four months?

Regards,

J Burrowes
