Possible Stupid Question about Games and Modems...

by Jody Mino » Sat, 11 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Alright, don't laugh your head off or anything, but a buddy of mine
told me that you could buy these headset microphones for your computer
and talk to your buddy while simultaneously racing him in NASCAR2.  I
don't know much about modems at all, but this doesn't sound right to me.
Is there anyone out here that can confirm or deny this?  If possible,
I'd like to do it, but right now I'm skeptical that it's possible...

You can do this buy getting a DVSD (Digital Simultanious Vioce/Data) modem. You both will need to
have one of these in order to talk to each other. I havn't tried it, but I've heard that it adds a
new dimintion to the racing experience.

Another option is the K2i Voice Commander (www.k2i.com). It is a headset that
plugs into an included ISA card. Doesn't eat any memory or run a TSR, just
(AFAIK) emulates keyboard inputs (altho-doesn't plug in-line in keyboard???).
Anyway current model has 20 command memory (needs more<coming soon I'm sure>),
and costs $129. This gadget is INCREDIBLE in N2-talk to your crew cheif & he
talks back !!!. I have a command file for N1, N1MULTI, N2, ICR2, GP2- in N1
multi-program your AutoChat commands-so you just say "STAY HIGH!", and thats
what appears on his screen. Some glitches, it doesn't/mis-recognizes some
commands, but all-in-all really cool.

DSVD modems allow you to do this. Last I heard, Office Depot was selling
the USR DSVD for $99, a steal for a 33.6 modem, but even better with DSVD.
You can find out more about the DSVD racing experience in an article that

He and I race a lot with DSVD and it adds a lot to the head-to-head racing
experience.

Does talking affect the quality of the connection at all? What about
compared to a dedicated modem connection?

I just bought 3 USR DSVD modems for friends from office depot in
C***te, NC for $79.99 each.  They are sending in the $20 holiday
rebate coupons (get them from the service desk at O.D..  BTW, there are
2 different coupons, so get the HOLIDAY rebate coupon.) for a net of
about $65 with tax.  Now THAT'S a deal for a 33.6 wth DSVD!

It's such a great deal because the Vi models are not upgradeable to
USR's new X2 technology.  From USR's webpage: "The Vi product line was
not built with the advanced technology architecture necessary to
support the x2 protocol. Since the Vi product is an older architecture,
and has been in the process of being discontinued since July of 1996,
it is not suitable for the x2 environment."

Still, for $65 how can you go wrong?

DSVD works quite well with some games and not others.  The USR is a
closeout modem and as such, you may not get much in the way of updates.
At this time only DSVD modems that are from the same company will work
together.  In other words, you each need the same modem.  Hayes DSVD works
with N1, but I've heard there is a bandwidth problem with N2.  And one
other note, the USR DSVD needs a phone headset, not just a mic & Speaker
headset, costs more and can't be run through an amplifier.  If the modem
companies ever reach a common protocol on DSVD it should be called v70
(yeah like v34 only differenent) the Hayes and some other companies will
upgrade to the standard, then any DSVD modem can talk to other DSVD modems
that also meet the v70 protocol.  (however USR seems very quiet on whether
they will support v70)
If nothing else, the $99 bucks for the USR is a great price for a very
solid 33.3 v34 modem, and if you get the DSVD to work, then it's a bonus.

Or you could get a speaker phone and a seperate line (supposing your at
home) and talk to them over the phone.

You can do this if you have a USR DSVD (Digital Simultaneous Voice and
Data) modem. Other companies make DSVD modems also. Both people need these
types of modems in order to talk and play at the same time. I have one and
it works great!
