Do I need a new wheel?

by SA » Tue, 17 Apr 2001 11:46:40

I just got a new pc and Nascar 4, and am considering upgrading my steering
wheel as well.

I'm currently using a Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1.  It's a bit old, but I've
always liked it.  However, I'm having trouble finding drivers for it
anywhere (including on www.thrustmaster.com).  I even emailed Thrustmaster,
and got a reply back with a broken link to the drivers.  It just gave a 404
error.

I've never tried a wheel/pedal combo, but suspect I wouldn't like floor
pedals as much as the paddles on the back of my current wheel.  And I'm
certain I don't want Force Feedback.  But since pretty much every wheel of
reasonable quality now comes with pedals, I don't see any other option if I
choose to upgrade.

I guess my question is this: as a non-hardcare racing sim fan, would I be
better off just sticking with my GP1 and setting up a custom steering wheel
controller in WinME or upgrading to a newer, USB wheel like the Thrustmaster
Nascar Pro Digital 2 (or similar product in that price range)?

SA,

Try The TM Charger !  It has paddles and pedals for all of your options.
It's better than the GP1 (Which I started with in 1997)

Stick with what you have. I have a Thrustmaster Grand Prix 1 and all the
drivers you need are the old tried and true 4 button 2 axis one included in
windows. But if you do go with a new wheel and pedals, I have a Thrustmaster
Pro Digital I can let you have cheap.

I just got a TM Charger II to replace my aging and broken GPI. It comes
with pedals, but I continue to use the paddles for acceleration and
braking.  It's better in some ways to the GPI.  The wheel itself does
not have the same hard *** cushion the GPI has but you get use to
that after a short while.
