RASCAR: Switching To Linux

by John Simmon » Wed, 18 Sep 2002 10:38:44

Well, I'm switching all (four) of my systems over to Linux, with the
exception oif my racing machine which will be dual-bootable to Win2K for
the purpose of racing.

I might miss a few emails as a result, and may even be late responding to a
few, but it's not because I'm trying to be rude. :)

So, anyone wanting to join RASCAR should NOT post emails directly to me, but
should instead post a message here or on the forum maintained for us by
racesimcentral.com.

I'm still working out the, ummm, quirks of the change-over, but so far it
hasn't been too gawd-awful bad.  I'm using KMail (a lot like Outlook) and
KNews (kinda like, ummm, Outlook), and have a *choice* of three or four web
browsers.  I have yet to spend a dime for software, and that alone is worth
the small hassles involved in making the switch to the dark side.

In any case, be patient if it seems like something is taking an unusually
long time for me to respond to.

John, do yourself a favour and try out the gnus news-package for
emacs. A slight learning curve, but definately worth it. Say goodbye
to the mouse as a necessary tool for newsreading.

I didn't even see him in the roster.  What's his car#?

He's not in the roster at all, so I guess depending on how you look at it,
his Siera ID is correct.  :)

He never registereed, Tim. It's up to Eldred whether or not he gets added to
invite list regardless of his roster status, and it's up to Dave to submit
a registration.  In fact, he may have, and I may have missed it.

If he wants to play in our sandbox, it's up to him to make sure all his
ducks are in a row.

Hehe, and even that might not be necessary any more... Ridcully
got N2002 to work using wine under Linux, with very good
results (read: frame rates) in OpenGL mode.

Web browser: Galeon
News reader: slrn, trn or GNUS (as somebody else pointed out in
this thread)
Mail client: Mutt

If you yearn for the old mouse-pushing days, give Evolution a
try.

Which distribution did you jump for?

all the best & feel free to ask for help with Linux. Welcome
back from the dark side, mate ;-)

Oh - I thought he WAS on the roster page...  Dave - please follow the
procedures on the webpage.  Thanks.

Wine, or WineX?  I'd certainly be interested in trying it.

Right now, I'm using the stuff that came with KDE (KMail and KNode), and
Netscape 7.0.  Someone told me about another newsreader canlled "Pan", but
I haven't had the chance to look for it yet.

Is that an email program?

Well, I have three - Two machines (this one and my laptop) are running
Redhat 7.3, and I have another desktop running Mandrake 9.0 beta 2.  I also
have Slackware 8.0 on a CD waiting to be installed.

I might end up with Slackware.

I can't get my CDRW to work on either this machine or the laptop, and the
laptop has a DVD player that Linux refuses toallow to play store-bought
DVD's or music CD's.

Eventually, all of this stuff will work. :)

I think he used the CVS version of Wine.

It's a full blown outlook clone with contacts, dates, email,
whatever.

Yep, that's what I really like about Linux: all things tend to
fall into place eventually. Did you enable ide-scsi emulation
for the cd writer?

Cheers,

I found out why my cd-rw's didn't work.  Before you can use KOnCD as a user,
you have to configure it as root and ADD the user(s) that you wish to allow
to use it.  I am no happily burning CD-R's at 40x.

:)

Next - the DVD player on the laptop...
