ICRNAS: Rules and documentation

by Tony Joh » Mon, 25 Jul 1994 04:43:00

Following is the complete text of SERIES.TXT, the full rules and
instructions for ICRNAS, the Internet NASCAR racing series.  Please
direct all questions, comments, or entries to ZYL...@NETCOM.COM.  Special
thanks to Tim Wortman for letting me base some of the rules  on his ICRS
series.

This file is also FTPable, along with the ICRNAS.ZIP series distribution
package, at FTP.NETCOM.COM in directory PUB/ZYLLYX/ICRNAS.

-------------------------------<CUT HERE>----------------------------------
THE EVENT: IndyCar/NASCAR I.

The competition will be run on a weekly basis using the IndyCar Racing
Simulation by Papyrus.  No other sim will be used.

Competitors must use an unmodified version of the program files with one
exception: You must use the ICRNAS car set and DRIVERS.TXT

Each person wishing to drive in the ICRNAS series must submit via e-mail
the following information:

1) Name             (for record-keeping)
2) Email address    (for correspondence, etc.)
3) Team Name        (for record-keeping)
4) Car Make/Model   (for record-keeping)
5) Sponsor          (for record-keeping)

For example, I would send the following:

1) Tony Johns
2) zyl...@netcom.com
3) Circle K Racing
4) Ford Thunderbird
5) Hot Wheels

THE CAR SET

The official file package is ICRNAS.ZIP, FTPable from FTP.NETCOM.COM in
directory PUB/ZYLLYX/ICRNAS.  The files you will need are in ICRNAS.ZIP,
which will contain the following files:

NASCAR.DAT   :  The car set for the series
DRIVERS.TXT  :  The drivers and power levels for the series
CARSET.DOC   :  The instructions for installing the car set
CALENDAR     :  The racing schedule for the ICR program
SERIES.TXT   :  The rules and schedule for the ICRNAS series

The CARSET.DOC file will contain instructions for installation of the cars,
but it is IMPORTANT that you install the CALENDAR file as follows:

1) Change to your IndyCar directory (usually C:\INDYCAR)
2) Rename your *existing* CALENDAR file to CALENDAR.BAK.
3) Copy the CALENDAR that came with your .ZIP pack to the C:\INDYCAR dir.

This file will dictate to ICR which tracks to run on which dates.  This
is important for the SEASON.TXT file which we use for race results.

CONFIGURATION SETTINGS:

All races and qualifying must have these settings:

WEATHER:  Announced before qualifying and races
TIRES:    Announced before qualifying and races (Compounds ONLY)
DAMAGE:   Off (see CRASHES)
YELLOWS:  On
PACE LAP: On
OPP %:    Announced before qualifying and races
RACE %:   Announced before qualifying and races
# OPPS:   15
GEARS:    FAST setting for each track

GENERAL OVERALL RULES:

1. ICRNAS I will be run in Championship Season mode of ICR. Drivers
wishing to join the series late may do so by entering champ season mode and
accelerating time to the correct race.

2. Since ICR doesn't support champ season in modem link, no head-to-head will
be allowed.

3.  For each race, EVERYONE will be allowed to change whatever they wish
EXCEPT for the gear ratios and tire compounds.  Anyone caught changing gear
ratios WILL BE DISQUALIFIED from the event.  Repeat offenders will be dropped
from the series.  Not only is it dishonest to break the rules, but extremely
unsportsmanlike.

TIRES

Another aspect of the cars that you cannot change is tires.  "Tire
companies" will supply all teams with tires for the race. All teams, there-
fore, will run different compounds at different races.  You CANNOT choose
your own compound -- the compound will be stock at each race. Different
teams may pick different tire companies.  There will be two fictional
companies, Goodyear and Hoosier.  You must contract out to one of these.

So, for instance, at a race in Michigan, Hoosier will come to the track
with a soft compound for all four tires, while Goodyear will come with
soft left sides and medium right sides.  All Goodyear drivers must
therefore set up their cars with medium right side tires (front and rear)
and soft left sides.  Although you may change the pressures on any tire,
you may NOT change the compound.

CRASHES

Every race will have the NO DAMAGE setting -- therefore, to combat the
"crasher" in all of us, there will be penalties for wrecked cars.  After
the race, the director will review the results and post a one-lap "black
flag" penalty for every three cars wrecked in the race.  That means if
you finished first, you actually finished farther back if you go around
wrecking people.

RESTARTS

You may restart with no reduction in boost for the first 10 laps of each
race UP TO FIVE RESTARTS.  After that, if you restart, you must set your
boost to 1.  This has the effect of you starting a race in your "backup"
car.

WEATHER AND OTHER SETTINGS:

Weather conditions, tire compounds, race length, etc. will be posted prior
prior to each event.  Everything but weather and tire compound will be the
same for qualifying and racing.  Separate weather conditions and tire com-
pounds will be posted for qualifying.

RESULTS AND RACE REPORTS:

Results will be mailed to each participant and posted on the USENET group
rec.autos.simulators.

POINTS:

Points will be tallied for both the competitors and the manufacturers.
Driver points will be tallied using the NASCAR points system, while
manufacturers points will be recorded as follows: 9 points to first placing,
6 to second placing, and 4 to third.  Additional points tallying will be
enacted for most poles won.

RANKING AND TIE BREAKERS:  In the likely event that two or more drivers
finish their race in the same position, they will be ranked for reporting
purposes by the following;

Laps down - If drivers A and B both finish their races in third place,
and driver A is one lap down from the lead lap while driver B finished
in the lead lap, then driver B, in the lead lap would be ranked above
driver A who was one lap down.

Average Speed - Based on the time difference between the leader and
the reporting driver as adjusted by the leaders average speed.

Example:  Driver A and B both finish in 2nd place.  Driver A is 2.5
seconds back from the leader in his race who averaged 135mph while
driver B is 2.5 seconds back from the leader in his race who average
128mph.  Driver A would receive the higher ranking.

IMPORTANT!

For all competitors: I ask that you please run your race one time and one
time only.  In other words, it is ILLEGAL to run a race on Tuesday, and
then another on Wednesday and a third on Friday, and submit the best
results of the three (except when your restart rule is in effect). No
practice races will be allowed. You may enter practice mode to determine the
strength of your competitors. In the interest of fairness please determine
the time your race will be run, run it, and submit those results.

QUALIFYING

Before each race, there will be a qualifying session.  This is NOT the
qualifying posted for the actual race, since you don't race against your
fellow competitors.  But it WILL determine the VIRTUAL starting grid for
the races, and it will determine the race results and the points
standings.  For example, if three drivers finish third in the race, and
all of them led a lap but didn't lead the most laps, their finishing
position in the points will be determined by their QUALIFYING position.
So you see that qualifying will be much more important in ICRNAS than in
other series.

To qualify for the VIRTUAL starting grid, you must alter your track
conditions as specified in the pre-race briefing mailed each week for
qualifying.  Then, go to the SINGLE RACE selection.  You may practice all
you want, but you may only run TWO QUALIFYING SESSIONS.  This is the
equivalent of two-day qualifying in NASCAR.  Your qualifying result will
be the LAST QUALIFYING RUN that you did.  If you score lower on the
second run, you MUST take that lower time.

Example:  Tony Johns' Qualifying Results
                  Michigan
                  Miller Genuine Draft 400

                  First day: 214.882mph
                  Second day: 220.112mph

Mail this format to me at ZYL...@NETCOM.COM.
Qualifying results are due at 10pm MST the Thursday before the actual race.
The VIRTUAL Qualifying Grid will be posted on rec.autos.simulators the
next day.

THE RACES

FOLLOWING THE RACES

1. After you finish your race IMMEDIATELY exit IndyCar Racing. Be sure to
exit the race as soon as the checkered flag falls, so as to minimize the
possibility of crashes after the race is over.

2. Locate the file SEASON.TXT  found in your IndyCar directory and copy
this file to an empty directory.

3. You will now need to edit some information in the file.  This can be done
through any windows editor or from the dos prompt by typing EDIT
SEASON.TXT.
