Visiting Munich, Cool Things to Do?

I'm going to be in Munich for several days soon.  Will
arrive on Sunday evening Feb. 24th, and leave on the
following Thursday.

Most of the time will be filled with boring meetings and
a plant visit with BMW :), but I'm hoping to find some
free time as well.

Any suggestions on how to have fun in Munich?  I'm not a
beer drinker, which is probably a real shame :)  Things
racing related would be great.

They have a lot of racecars, sadly, I wasn't too aware of racecar
history when i was there in 99. But they have the very good looking
79 renault.

As for not beeing a beer drinker in Munich, a REAL shame :)

I second that... the Deutches Museum is probably the "coolest" museum in
Europe. Aside from a couple of racers on display there's the high voltage
electricity and mining exhibits, which are pretty spectacular. Not to
mention the full size "cutaway model" of a U-boat (an actual U-boat sawed in
half).

The visit to the BMW plant is also very interesting, especially the part
where they make their high performance engines. Cleanest machine shop you're
ever likely to see.

A nice place to spend an evening is the Hohg Cafe... it's on the eight floor
of a building alongside Munich's main shopping street (name escapes me at
the moment). When I was there they had a very democratic "all you can eat"
formula and the atmosphere was great.

As for not being a beer drinker... at least try a Weissbier, it might change
your mind. Watch it though... you can get plastered very easily on those.

Hi Pat,

adding a few items to what the others said - Englischer Garten,
Leopoldstrasse, Starnberger See, some sightseeing in the countryside
southeast/south of Munich (other directions aren't as nice as the south
IMHO, at least not near Munich, you need to drive farther). Eat a Weisswurst
with sweet mustard. Eat a 'Schaeufele with Kloss'. Drink an
'Apfelsaftschorle' if you're not into ***. Visit the Alte or Neue
Pinakothek. Go see the Rathaus :-)

Is this wheat beer (instead of barley?)

I'll sixth the museum. If you can go only one place in Munich, that's the
place. The famous glockenspiel is also worth a look, at least I loved it as
a kid.

Ok, you don't drink beer, I can relate, neither do I.

Do you eat meat? If so you're in danger of looking like a balloon by the
time you leave. Munich is the wurst captial of the universe, ( nyuck,
nyuck), the wares of the average street vendor surpass most of what you can
find in expensive delis elswhere. Venison to die for. Oxtail soup by the
tureen. Don't worry about what there is to see.

Eat.

Other than that I'm afraid you'll find Munich is pretty much another
McBigCity.

I believe that a Weissbier is a light beer, witha touch of lemon in it, no?

Wheat beer has a certain wheat content, but depending on the
variety also normal barley malt.

some brands have a kind of "banana" flavour what is hard to
describe. Also, wheat beer is generally top-fermenting as
opposed to bottom-fermenting lagers/pilseners (different kind
of yeasts used in the brewing process).

The lemon they put in the glass is a leftover from the days when
beer would often go stale in the keg or go sour, so bartenders
put some slices of lemon into the beer to make it taste
"fresher".

For todays commercial wheat beer, lemon is hardly ever required.

<snip>>

Cannot second that.
Lived in Munich for 3 years, comming from somewhere west Germany countryside. I
never liked big cities, but I felt fine in Munich.
I guess that's the reason why they call Munich 'The biggest village in Germany'
