Removing DX7... Help Please!!!

by Jay » Thu, 13 Jan 2000 04:00:00

Hi, I've got a PC running an AMD K6 400 and i've loaded DX7.0a to take
advantage of the latest Voodoo II drivers (which are beta, and work with
DX7)

Since loading DX7 (from DX6.1) i've run into numerous problems with games
such as Motoracer, N2, and NFS High Stakes, etc...

I'd like to go back to my old video drivers, but need to get rid of DX7
first...

Can anyone point me to a website that provides either an auto-de-install
utility or VERY clear directions (i'm not familiar with Regedit!) on putting
DX6.1 back on my system????

I suspect the AMD chip doesn't like DX7, either that or the video drivers!!!
:-(

Any and all help, greatly appreciated!

Go to http://www.ebrink.com/dxun/Direct.htm for a DirectX 7 uninstaller.

Have you tried your old drivers with DX7.0a? I personally still use DX5.0
VoodooII drivers in combination with DX7.0a (later VII drivers have always
given me trouble).
I have another tip for you that might be helpful:
Although my Creative VII card generally doesn't like drivers above the DX
5.0 version, there are some newer games that simply *require* newer VII
drivers, like NFS High Stakes. In that case I just extract those required
VII drivers to the particular game directory. When I play that game, the
correct drivers will be picked up locally, from the game's directory. This
will allow the game to work with newer drivers, without actually
*installing* these drivers for your VII card.

I don't really know how to uninstall any DX version, but I've found that a
reinstall of Windows98 will downgrade my DX to version 5.0. Maybe you should
try that, and see what version of DX you'll end up with (probably depends on
wich OS version you install). Once you're back to 5.0, you can pick it up
from there.

This guy made a DX7 Un-installer :
http://www.ebrink.com/dxun/Direct.htm

Didn't try it myself, but it looks ok and enables you to put
back DX6 wiyhout re-installing Windows or even formatting your
harddisk.
