Ready to buy new ECCI (have $ standing by) BUT...

by Bruce Mill » Thu, 15 Jan 2004 19:46:51

For some years now I've been wanting to purchase ECCI controls, and I
am on the verge of ordering the new 6000 wheel and pedals ($$ is
ready, and I can order at any time now).

But... I've also been following with interest BRD's development of the
FF wheel. Because of a slight personal preference for FF I suddenly
find myself willing to wait for the BRD. In fact, I would wait for the
BRD simply to get the FF, except that pedals are also very, very
important to me and BRD indicates that the FF wheel will require
exclusive use of the Speed7 pedals. Because I have not tried or even
personally seen either of the sets, I am interested in opinions about
(1) ECCI vs. waiting for BRD FF, and (2) the precision and durability
of the BRD Speed7 pedals vs. the new ECCI pedals. The ECCI pedals
"look" better online, but I cannot compare for myself, and want some
opinions.

Please don't post about buying one vs. other due to cost (yes, of
course money matters, but for sake of this post assume cost does not
matter because I have already accepted that both options are quite
expensive).

I'm waiting for the BRD FF wheel...but from their site:

"Release Date: The release date for the new device is not confirmed yet,
but it will not be before the end of 2002."

I have previously owned and used the ECCI CDS 4000 system and now own
the BRD Speed 7 pedals and wheel. I have not used the new ECCI system
but have seen them online. My feeling is that in a desktop like
environment the ECCI system is better. If you decide to go with some
kind of***pit like I did the BRD's are better. Both systems are
extremely durable and well made. Any other questions pleae e-mail me

I have a similar opinion to yours in that I want FF and the pedals are very
important to me. If there is one thing that my time in sim racing has taught
me, its that driving on the limit demands very subtle control of the gas and
brake pedals. Most pedals out there are so poorly designed and cheaply
constructed that it is very difficult to produce consistent lap times.
Without consistency, its very hard to find and stay on the limit. Good lap
times are then just flukes that happen every once in a while.

I own a Logitech MOMO wheel and had been using it for quite some time with
the Act Labs Precision Pedals. I could not stand the Logitech pedals and the
Act labs pedals were better. Still I felt the pedals were holding me back
from taking things to the next level. For example, people often would be
able to out brake me into Parabolica at Monza in GPL.

Just before Christmas, I e-mailed ECCI. I had seen their 3000 series pedals
which are a replacement for the MOMO pedals. Still, I really wanted the 6000
series pedals with their pressure modulated brake called PMB 2. But I also
wanted FF. They replied that for a limited time they are offering their 6000
series pedals with the PMB 2 as a stand alone set that is compatible with
the Logitech MOMO! I ordered it immediately. I have received them and they
are fantastic. I could go on for quite a while on the differences.

For now, you may want to consider this option assuming it is still
available. They are here in the USA and the design/build quality is
impeccable. You say in your post that money is not a primary consideration.
But consider the fact that right now the dollar is quite weak against most
currencies, the pound included. While I don't have the exact cost, I would
be very suprised if the ECCI pedals are not quite a bit cheaper than the
Speed 7.

Best of Luck.

Great!  I will contact ECCI immediately.  I see that they may may/not
be still offering this option, but if enough people are requesting the
6000 pedals, maybe they will make them availiable on a "less limited"
basis.  :)
