I just posted this in Jacob's N3 newsgroup also.
why can't racing sims have dynamic lighting.  While I have to admit
the new Papy track is gorgeous, the lights just appear to be painted on
background material.  I think the Quake/Unreal type of games have
spoiled me on the effects of individual lights casting their own glow.
Rather than see just a dark skyline, I'd love to see the flash of the
lights reflecting off the cars as we moved from  bank to bank...

No, no, no -- that's an OVAL.  You mean, "Too bad it ain't an IRL sim."

If I wanted an IRL sim, I'd just wait for
Al Unser Jr's Arcade Racing II!

No, we want RACING sims.   You can't have a real sim on something thats not
even a real racing series.  =)

I agree it would be amazing if they used true light sourcing on the
light standards and see real shadows being cast. Or even have the sun in
the sky as a real light source and having the sun moving across the sky
with the time of day so at the end of the race there may be a huge
shadow going into turn 4 or something like that. Imagine running a
league race at a track with no lights but the race is taking longer then
expected and the sun starts going down. ;) It would really be a sight.
But I think light sourcing is really demanding and would bog the average
video video cards and cpu's in a racing sim, I hope I'm wrong.

Race games have dynamic lighting: GPL, F12K, RC2000, NFS:PU spring to mind.
I'm sure there are more.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, but NASCAR 2000 has a
gorgeous roll bar shadow that moves across the dash and looks just
like it does from the in-car camera shots.

My buddy bought the game and lent it to me, and I've been fiddling
with it. I really don't care much for the game, but the graphic
effects are really sweet.

No I'm pleased to hear SOMEBODY is attempting dynamic
lighting.  I would like to see it in all sims.
