GP2 - no major advancement

>SVGA is out the door for 90% of PC users.  P133 and S3 just aint up to

that's the general problem with PC's today: Same hardware is not
guaranteed to deliver equal performance. I tried the game in VGA mode
with most details turned off on my borrowed-from-work 486-66, and it
played ok. It went better on a friend's P100, the textures look nice.

I'm really disappointed about the lack of "race" realism, so to speak:
No warm-up lap, no blue flags, drive-thru gravel beds, no end-of-race
celebration driving into the parc ferm'e, just as in GP1.  The game
IMHO was definitely not worth the wait of almost four years, and the
next version should definitely be out sooner. Also, a full-race replay
as even ICR I had it would definitely do this game some good.

To be fair, other circuits look ok, you definitely took the heaviest
load on cpu power there.

Maybe there'll be a BeBox port, dreaming is allowed, right? ;-)

Yeah, I would have loved to see more action in the pits, too.

Cheers,

Uwe

SVGA is out the door for 90% of PC users.  P133 and S3 just aint up to
the job.

The engine is very similar.  Go up towards Roses at Monaco on the left
off the track and you are pulled into the barrier, same on Amiga, same
on F1GP.

Even in VGA, I have to ALT-D, to drop the detail at Monaco....Amiga.

Ok, so I'll have to wait a year or so, before I can run the game SVGA,
all detail, always under 100% processor occupancy.

It is pretty much the same game, all the keys are the same the replays
are the same, the pits are the same, the graphics have been tarted up
beyond most users reach.

Maybe a wheel, will realise the potential of the game.

It needs a TCP/IP patch, CCs just aint the same in any game any more.

Mr Crrammond, as you probably know, don't do sequels.

Anyway lets see what modem play is like.

Ive got a p100 and I run most detail except mirror full detail, and I
get 12.6fps in svga (8mb ram) Doesn't sound a lot , but its playable.
Ive also installed on a DX80 with full detail vga, and it runs ok.

>>SVGA is out the door for 90% of PC users.  P133 and S3 just aint up to

Folks,

Don't be suckered by this tripe.

It just ain't so. Poor old Norm is either 'confused', <G> or he got
badly 'ripped' when he chose his "P133" system.

On a *properly* set up system composed of QUALITY hardware of this
level, GP2 runs SVGA in eyeball'fluid motion' with all (sky texture
excepted) detail on in every track I've tried so far except Monaco,
where the view is so pretty an MMX iP200 probably wouldn't do it
justice. <smile>

Sky detail is off. (Really rips into the frame rate, like about -5fps)

Achieving around 16fps SVGA with between 100% - 130% CPU occupancy when
really loaded with heavy traffic, smoke etc

Speaking from first hand experience & from the perspective of a sim
*** who is most critical in respect of expectations vs claims from
sim publishers.

As a basis of comparison, GP2 runs 'smoother' than NASCAR in SVGA on the
same system.

On the system detailed below, GP2 is just a pleasure to drive, although
as always, faster hardware is always desirable so if anyone wants to
donate an HX based m'board, S3 Virge'chipset or a beta MMX 200MHz CPU,
donations can be sent to....<g>

iP133
Triton FX (+Intel BusMastering) & 256k L2 PBC
32Mb 60ns FP DRAM
2Mb S3 Trio 764 (<Acer P60> Phoenix Video BIOS VESA 1.2 8^( 70ns DRAM)
..So the video card 'ain't' anything fancy or mega expensive..
Seagate Mode 4 HDD

Running under DOS 7.0 with the app fully installed to the HDD.

So far I haven't tried out VESA 2.0 (Scitech's SDD 5.2) Anyone? Can
anyone advise if they have noticed any gain or enhancment by using this
with GP2.
