Absolutely unfortunate. The online nature of the game is pretty
unnecessary. You end up spending too much attention on economy and it
detracts from pure racing and the joy of cars from the era. I'd like
to have the option to play online but not be limited to online play.

"BD"
 I'd like
Are there any titles out there where OFFline play can contribute to
ONline?  i.e.  go off and have your character learn how to fence or go to
farmer school etc...then the new attributes can improve his online abilities
or even give him new weapons...cars...whatever...

(yes I was mishmashing rpg/racing etc etc)

Need for Speed Hot Pursuit 2 will be released on October 21. It will be
offline and online. Most sim players want to play offline so I don't
understand why Motor City was online only. Maybe they thought they
would make more money if it was online only (monthly fees). Game theft
was probably an issue also.

Hm.  Assuming Nascar Thunder 2k3 has a passable (i.e. 8-16 player)
multiplayer mode, I wonder if it's possible to do a league of sorts
with the career mode I've read about (i.e. finding sponsors, paying
the team, etc).

It would rule if Papyrus would incorporate a career mode into a future
nascar title and actually make have a part of the server software be a
league administration tool that tracked points, earnings, and a
player's current career/finances.  You could have real leagues where
the cars were of different quality like real life.  In a top tier
league, you could actually have players competing for rides.

If I remember righlty it WAS started as an off/online game but the
suits saw the $$$ was in online (seeing UO/Evercrack) and pushed for
online only.
The problem with that is they seemed to have slashed the development
time (assuming one half is half the time) and thus released a product
that all the reviews have said is buggy in ways to blow your
investment out of the water (ie: dropping and making you lose your car
mid-race, which is why one reveiwer said everyone was just running the
basic car)

You do the research, I already did.

Only about 1/3 of video game purchasers say they have played a game online.
That means 2/3 have never played online. If you remove Everquest and
Counter-Strike from those statistics, the number would be quite a bit less
than 1/3. The number that play car sim games regularly online is quite a bit
less than 1/3 of those that have purchased a car sim game.

RAS? You mean rec.autos.simulators? What does that have to do with the
number of sim gamers that play online?
