N3 and 50th anniversary release

by ge » Fri, 13 Mar 1998 04:00:00

Just read something about Sierra publishing a 50th anniversary edition
of Nascar Racing, talk about cashing in on a successful product.

I did read that the N3 edition should be based on the Grand Prix
Legends engine that will allow the car to get airborn, and partially
airborn.  Sounds great for cornering on a road course when the tire
comes up off the ground :)  I guess that there will be new physics
added also.  The  Sierra mag also said that N3 would be the first 3d
enhanced racing sim.   I wonder if that's a hint about the not soon to
be released 3Dfx patch for N2????

I was gratified to read that they will have straight pit roads
and double file restarts.  I didn't get too e***d about the
cars getting airborne, I want a sim, not an arcade!

If I wan't to see 'em get airborne, I watch the races on TV.

I too am glad to read about the new features they are planning on
implementing, But I don't think you understood him right, I think he
was referring to the individual wheels loosing contact with the racing
surface, as they do in Winston Cup. I for one would be glad to see
this as it adds to the realism. As for flipping and rolling, I can
take it or leave it, but I think it would be a waste of precious
programming space.

If they are already implementing flipping/rolling on their physics
engine for GPL, I don't think it would be that much of a waste of
programming time to implement it in N3 (since they are using the same
physics engine as GPL).  There is some flipping/rolling in NASCAR, David
Green at Bristol in the August race, Randy LaJoie in Los Vegas, Dale
Earnhardt in '97 Daytona 500, Steve Grissom in '96 May Talladega race.
etc.  As long as they don't go overboard on it.  If their physics model
is as good as I've heard, it should account for the weight of stock car,
causing less flipping/rolling than the much more unstable cars in GPL.

Several Guys Commented on the Flipping and Rolling in N3...

My 4 cents...

Mmmm... I think the ability to experience a flip/roll would be a neat
addition... as long as the physics model is accurate. That being so,
then you won't be getting air all that often, anyway.  But, on those
REAL DOOZIE crashes that I'm famous for (and I DO take crashing into an
Art Form)... if my car destroys itself going side over side/end over
end, that might at least give me something entertaining (the replay) to
help offset having to use accelerated time to finish another race!

yep, htat was what I was talking about.
As for flipping, it would make for some interesting clips from NROS.

As long as the flipping and rolling is realistict. One of my dissapointments
of CPR was how stupid it's airbone acrobatics were. I still pray that N3
will have the option to have the arms and steering wheel either on or off.
Lets all hope for a new Atlanta and the unlikely event of Daytona or Indy.

N3 will be based on the 1998 season.  So it SHOULD(and I think WILL)
have the New Atlanta Track, the NEW Darlington track(reversed
straights), and the NEW Texas(improvments to the track from the turns
to the straights).

Flipping would be cool as long as it doesn't happen all the time... I
wouldn't mind the Dale and Dale Jr. type acrobatics at Daytona, but they
shouldn't be flipping at Martinsville all the time. If I wanna die every
time I bump into somebody, I'll break out the old Atari and play Pole
Position2.

just my 2 cents...

And the new Sears Point.  I will miss the Caroussel  :-(

It will not have Daytona. This is from official sources.  There is still
talking with IMS people for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway from the last
news I saw.

Still it's all part of the realism in the game, I don't care to see it
on TV myself it's ***y frightening, but hey i wouldn't mind going for
that ride in my sim <VEG>
