Joystick on Laptop?

Joystick on Laptop?

by Adam » Tue, 16 Feb 1999 04:00:00

Joysticks and steering wheels are essential in many of the games I play and
although this is fine on my desktop PC, my laptop, which is far more
powerful than my desktop, doesn't have a joystick port.

So what I was wondering was whether or not there was something I could buy
which could be plugged into one of the other ports to allow me to use a
joystick?

I really am quite keen about this, and my *** days won't be complete
unless I can use a joystick on this laptop.

Any comments and suggestions would be much appreciated.

If your laptop is more powerful than your desktop, then it is probably new
enough to have USB, which is one solution.  If not, then there are several
PCMCIA game cards (joystick ports) available for about $70 US.  Some
brands are NewMedia and J.C.designs (which I have and which works well in
DOS mode and Win95).  With a compact CH Products Mach 1 stick I hve a very
portable setup for quick races in GP2, ICR2 etc. on the road.

p.s. I have also hooked a Thrustmaster T2 through the PCMCIA card and it
worked well.

So if I went to a computer shop, what exactly would I have to ask for?

My laptop is a Pentium II 300MHz, 128MB of RAM, Windows 98 and a whopping
15" screen. Compared to my 166 Pentium, it's a King!

Also, how would I install the PCMCIA cards in the laptop?

My joystick and steering wheel are both CH products, I think.

A PCMCIA game card.

There's usually a compartment on the side that you open up, and they
just slide right in.

The only problem with your laptop for *** will be the lack of a 3D
card.

Gravis makes a small gamepad called the Stinger, which is designed for
laptops.  I'm not sure what kind of connector it has.

Getting a gameport PCMCIA adapter would be a possibility... or:
A little bit of shameless advertising: How about the Logitech WingMan
Formula Force for a wheel, or the WingMan Force for a joystick? Both
have serial and USB connectors...

Which brings me to my next point. If I am able to install a PCMCIA port, why
not a Voodoo II? I have one of my desktop PC, which is a Pentium 166, and it
has taken games to a new level of existance. I would do ANYTHING to be able
to install my Voodoo II in this laptop. A-N-Y-T-H-I-N-G!

Is there a way?

I have a D3D card in here, which helps with games, but of course, it's not
nearly as good as the Voodoo II...

What is a USB connector, and how is it any different to a PCMCIA port, and
at what cost?

The chipset would probably never fit, and if it did, it would melt your
palm rests :)

I think ATI has pretty much got the lock on Laptop 3D (for now).  The
Rage Pro isn't that bad, and there is talk that the next PowerBook G3's
will use the 128 Rage Fury set, so I can't help but think that PC
manufacturers will OEM it too...
