NR2003: All other pit crew activity?

by double » Tue, 18 Feb 2003 07:37:03

I thought in the preview interviews for NR2003, they said that pit road
would be full of pit crews servicing the other cars?  (I took that to mean
you'd see guy changing tires, etc. on the other cars too)

I take it that's not the case?

What's different aobut pit road from NR2002 then?

They never said that.  They kinda "made us think" it would be that, when
they wrote about other pit crews being there.  It's only the pitboard and
the guys behind the pitwall.

In N2002 you only ever saw your own pit board / crew.

In N2003, you see everyone elses boards as well as their crew behind the
fence. Unfortunately you still don't see them working on others cars.
Perhaps this could be enabled in a patch or an INI or something.

Yep...

We can all use that "pit crew enabled" INI file as soon as we get our 50 ghz
CPU's installed....along with our 90 gig of ram video cards!  And even then,
traversing pit road with an FPS of (3).......won't be too hard since we are
going slow!   On today's hardware.....my guess is the frame rate would be
something like "1 FPW".....(that's one frame per week!).........LOL.....what
are you thinking?

Dammint Tom if I WANT to crawl down pitlane for two weeks just to see all
the pitcrews in actions, then I should be able to...Oh wait....I don't even
have N2k3 yet....  :0

Dammint Tom if I WANTED to crawl down pitlane for two weeks just to see
all the pitcrews in action, I'd have bought the dang sim already.

yes, this was an obvious concern when I was typing up that question, but I
thought I'd ask anyway.  no need to be facetious  ;-)

Hey if GP4 can do it, you'd think an advanced sim like N2003 could do it!!
:D

And it did it pretty well, I'd say.  Despite the many warts on that one, the
first time I came down the pitlane and saw several other crews coming, going
or working, I was very impressed.  Say what you want about "eye candy", but
this really put me in the game.

It has multiple crews during the actual RACE?  Cool.  How hard is it to find
your own pit box?

Aren't vidcards doing, like, trillions of triangles a second now?  The
*option* of being able to switch them on would've been nice.  They
coulda been (even more) simple stick-men just for a bit of bussle on
the pitlane.  I'm guessing that there were issues other than graphical
demands that meant it didn't get included.

IMO, even just having pit crews behind the wall *is* a big step
forwards, though.  You're gonna have to really be on the ball when
pitting mid-pack now, rather than just look for the sole pitcrew.
Pitcrews behind wall = playablity enhancement, pit-crews working on
cars = eye candy...

Mark

Yes Eldred, GP4 did this fantastically well, the pit crews even run out from
the garage carrying tyres / wings (if they need replacing) and fuel rigs. It
was fairly easy to find your pit stall even if everyone else was coming in
because your lollypop man stands in the middle of pit road waving his shaft
at you, and when you pull in he runs back to the front of the car and shoves
his shaft in your face. It really is well done and worth checking out.

that's what I had envisioned as something that would work.  I'm having
visions of 4-D Boxing (if you remember that old game) type people (although
not THAT "polygony" if you know what I mean.)

I played the HELL out of GP2.  I also got GP3.  I just wasn't impressed enough
to shell out for GP4.  I'm not exactly sure why...
