Well, since you're in the U.K., I can tell you that F1GP is out on
budget (PowerPlus). I got mine a year or so ago for just 15.00 UKP
on CD-ROM (there's no difference between the floppy and CD versions,
just that the CD is easier to install).
As F1GP II has been delayed several times already, I still don't
think we'll see it on the revised release date (March 1996), so
yep, go ahead and get F1GP I.
With all the patches and editors available, it's still an excellent
