nFORCE2 Sound, is it any good?

by MadDAW » Thu, 10 Apr 2003 01:16:15

Awhile back someone had said the nFORCE2 built in sound didn't have any
bigger performance hit than a separate card. So since I'm redoing my system
I'm thinking about giving it a shot. So how good/bad does the nFORCE2
chipset onboard actually sound. My Phillips AE card has some weird effects
in NR2002/NR2003 so I'll probably try it as long as its not total ***
sound.  Will it do surround sound on non-surround software like the Phillips
and Santa Cruz?

thanks

nForce 2 sound is as good as any non-pro PCI Sound card (i.e. Audigy, Game
Theatre, SB Live etc etc )

It's 5.1 surround sound - superb quality - no irq problems - basically - the
dogs kahunas.

Details here
http://www.racesimcentral.net/#apu_t...
o_processing_unit  ( nforce 1 had same audio unit as nforce 2 has )

" This APU comes with features that blow away every sound card that's
currently on the market, which is even more impressive when you consider
that the APU is integrated into nForce's south bridge 'MCP' and not a
discrete card "

and http://www.racesimcentral.net/

" The sound system is not exactly new, but it's still one of the best that
the market has to offer. Note here that the APU is part of the chipset, and
not a separate sound card. "

in conclusion. HELL YEAH!

Yep, it's been good for me.  I dumped my Audigy in favour of it, and all
sound problems with NR2002 and others disappeared immediately.  I'm not sure
that the sound quality has quite the same depth, but I'm being picky!

HOWEVER make sure if you are buying a new MB to get one with MCP-T
for the sound, otherwise the MB uses the basic AC97 chip.
Basically look for "delux" versions (a7nx-Deluxe,MSI-K7N2G-ILSR)
If it has Serial ATA it looks to be fully loaded as well

It is the best MB I've ever owned! The sound is great and trouble free. It's
a ASUS A7N8X Deluxe.

mcpt-t does not mean its the soundstorm certified model.
asus recently removed the soundstorm lable on their deluxe because it could
not meant nvidia's s/n ratio. there are only 2 or three certified mcp-t
boards available.

Very good, although sound is musically not quite as good as an audigy, but u
need a proper av amp setup to notice the difference.

Did I read that review right? The onboard sound takes a major hit on
performance. BTW this Epox 8RDA+ is the best board I have ever owned. My
