Try this for your sound problems, it might help

In the core.ini file in the sound section there is a setting for sound
buffers. By default its set to 0. It says to set it to a value of 3 or
higher. Now I have a Philips AE sound card and it helped with the snap
crackle and pop as well as the low engine sound. It didn't cure all the
ills, but it did help. I still have some scp but not near as much as before
and I only have it set to 4. Setting it to 3 really didn't do anything, and
I'll probably try higher than 4 as well since it sems to be worse the more
cars on the track I have. My cars engine sound also got a little louder. Now
I never had that problem to the extent that some people do so I don't know
how much it will help there, but it did effect it a little on mine.
