Quite awhile ago, I remember a thread in this NG which addressed how to
get GPL to run on a system with more than 512 Megs of RAM. It had
something to do with adding a line in the [vcache] setting of
system.ini, I think.

Can anyone provide me that info?

This is for a friend who's getting RAM-related error messages on his
system when he throws in a 3rd stick if 256 megs. He doesn't run GPL,
but I thought that my question might solve his problem.

Not strictly about GPL, it sounds like what you're referring to is the Win98
glitch whereby a pc loses the plot when 98 and >512mb ram used.

Add/modify the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the
maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or
less.

Example:
[VCache]
MaxFileCache=524288
