First practice results at Texas are in,   I went back and compared the
Qualifying times of Last year's IRL race with the Nascar Qualifying record
and set those against the Cart Champcar speeds.
( all speeds rounded off because I hate dots...)  :>

Nascar fastest Q speed.  192 mph
IRL Pole last year            215 mph
CART practice speeds    233mph...two hundred and thirty three FREAKIN' miles
an hour!

They will probably get to 236 or naybe even 237 tomorrow.  It's just
first day of practice!

Reminds me of that kind simulation in ICR2. I think it rocked for the time!
I guess it didn't have Texas but going down the straights at Michigan
was pretty cool.

I seem to remember tweeking the stock block Buicks in the original Papy
sim, the Indy 500 the simulation.  I 'think' the speeds we got were 240mph
for the lap average.  Of course we all know
only Al Unser Sr. could get one of those early stock-blocks to finish...:)

Bill Elliott turned a 212.8 mph at Talladega back in '87 (before restrictor plates). Just a few mph off
of a IRL car from today ...... makes one wonder what they can do now if left unrestricted

I never could, but I could do 240+ laps in a race setup.

Of course, I'd always end up in a wreck before the end.

In a slower, saner setup I was able to finish occasionally.

The only thing I remember about ICR2 is that after 3 or 4 laps on an
oval, my back end would just come out.  No matter what I did to the
setup.  I even tightened up the front and took all the wing out of the
front.  No matter what I did I still couldn't put more than a handful
of laps together on ovals.

My memories of that game were starting dead last and seeing how many
positions I could make up on lap1 .  If I remember correctly, I could
get up to 11th or 12th on lap 1 from 33.  My best lap was a 242 or so
in the Buick.

BTW Al Unser Sr didn't drive an early stock block.  Those go back to
1983.  The Buick that Al Unser Sr drove to 3rd was in 1992 with an
enormous amount of attrition.  Was 1997 the last year of the Buick?

The rear-end swapping in ICR2 was a weight transfer bug.  felt like your
tires suddenly went flat.
they fixed that witha patch..
Yes Al didn't run the EARLIEST Buicks...but he was the first guy to get
one to finish on the podium..
even led late in the race as I recall(probably due to pitstop shuffling)

Yea, but do you know how fast an IRL car would go at Talladega? Remember,
NASCARs lift at Texas, Atlanta, so on...IRL cars don't. At Talldega, I'd be
willing to bet 240/250 would be easy...and a CART might be capable of 270!

IIRC I did a 254mph lap in IndyCar Racing 2 at Talladega.  I doubt IRL would
go faster then 250, with their limited horsepower.

I was in the same territory at wht was a much slower Talladega w/CART/IC2. And
that was a physics model from 5-6 years ago!

I agree that IRL might beat 245 or so...there only so much you can do withn
naturally aspirated engines.

Perhaps I should explain "slower"....I meant that the dogleg carved off more
speed than gained, like the Talladega in N3/N4.

Unfortunately, we'll never know...
