 I recently installed nascar 4 on a new computer.  P4 2 gigahertz, riva tnt2
ultra, 512meg rdram.  When I get past startup screen, and go to main menu, I
never see the main menu, it kicks me back to desktop. Running windows xp.
Have tried two different vid card drivers, have tried running with no patch,
1st patch and second patch to no avail.  Have tried direct 3d and open gl
modes, open gl just locks machine up.  HELP!

I'm sorry, i don't have anything to help, i'm just curious. Why such a high
end machine with such a crappy video card in comparison?

I don't know what the problem is. But, that video card is severly
underpowered for that class of cpu and is a bottleneck. If you have the
money then get yourself a GF3 Ti 200 and I bet your problem will disappear.

Are you running OpneGL or D3D. You may want to try the one you are not
using. It may be the video drivers, have you upgraded to the latest.

Because I had the card already, and I didn't think there would be a HUGE
performance gain over a new one, seems how everything I have tried running
now has plenty of frame rate anyway.  A new card would be overkill when the
prices will drop the longer I wait.

As I have said, I tried both modes to no avail.  I beg to differ on the
card, I realize it is a bottle neck, but it is more card than I need right
now, for the games that I play, so I was trying to make it work.

I said drivers, not a new card. Sometimes different versions of the drivers
have an affect.

That old card is waaay underpowered to run N4 in all its glory.  BUt it
should run provided you have solid drivers, try a different dirver set for
your video card.

If the card is more than you need right now then so is a P4 2ghz cpu.You are
just hobbling your cpu by using that vid card. But, it's your choice.

I have had problems similar to this with some other games.  All were
because the game expected a particular video driver, and I was using
another.  All were a relatively common problem with those particular
games.  Haven't heard of this yet with N4.

Try the nVidia reference drivers, if you are using Creative's or some
other mfr's drivers.  Be prepared to try a lot of drivers, there are
about a gazillion iterations of the nVidia Detonators out there.
There used to be a site where you could download any or all of them.
Don't recall the URL, sorry.

good luck,
Gerald

I misspoke on the card.  It is a hercules geforce 2 ultra 64meg.  It was the
best card to have a year ago, and I am getting over 70 fps in f12001 so it
is not bottlenecking the system too bad.

That sounds like what GPL does on my office computer with the same video
card...  How do you try the different modes if it won't let you get into the
program?

No, that card is quite a different beast from the TnT and is not a
bottleneck at all on a P4 2ghz machine.

Try getting into the app.ini file and change the line:

[ Graphics ]
lastRasterizerDLL = *whatever*.dll          ; Last rasterizer DLL selected

To:

[ Graphics ]
lastRasterizerDLL = softdll.dll          ; Last rasterizer DLL selected

Maybe it's trying to use 3dfx or something? Only thing i can think of.
