GPL: if it's free soon, why not put it on the Net

Hi,

If GPL will be given away to buyers of that German magazine (could someone
remind me which mag it is?), then it must be not too illegal (and
defendable) to put the whole sim onto someone's website.

I read regularly that people have a hard time finding a copy of GPL, so why
not put is somewhere for download if they are giving it away anyhow??

grtngs,

The German mag have probably gotten permission from Papy to release the
German version (maybe for a nice profit for Papy, I don't know) so it's all
hunky dory.
Uploading the whole English (or other) version to your own site with no
permission for fee is warez.

Actually, Sierra have re released GPL!  Its a "Sierra Original", which is
the game reboxed, with the manuals as pdf (i think, as i've not bought it!)

So, the game isn't abandonware yet.

It's really quite simple -- it's not yours to give away. If Sierra decides
to make it freely distributable over the net (not very likely) then so be
it. But it is their property and they have the right to decide what to do
with it. If you give it away without their permission, it is illegal.

because in the same magazine you will probably find a VERY nice review on
nascar4, AND some nice adversti***t for it too.

It's called a bargain....you give me this, I give you that...

Now if you have something that papyrus DESPERATELY want, then maybe you can
negotiate GPL on your website, with all versions and patches, and if they
REALLY REALLY want what you have then maybe GPL 2 ?

I spent most of 97 in germany and became familiar with the mag I think your
talking about. They release 3 versions of this mag available. The normal mag
(just the mag), the CD edition (Usual Demos, videos, etc..), The Full
Version edition (Complete Fullversion game and the demo cd's from the CD
edition).

Now the normal version was about 5 marks the cd 7 and the full version was
20 marks. So as you can see it is not free! They have a full game on that
version of the mag every month. Obviously they strike up deals with game
co's or distributors to effecively sell older games with the magazine at a
cheaper price. 20 marks isnt bad for a older game and a magazine?? I would
assume that they give papy or whoever a share of that 20 for selling the
game with it. Effectively you are buying the magazine with the bonus
software and on top of that gpl is being re release on budget and on top of
that aswell sierra still exists as a company and has revenue (no matter how
small) to lose from people getting the game without paying for it.

I hope thats correct? If anybody from germany wants to correct me after all
it was a few years ago just say so. Hope that clears it up for you.

It really isn't a matter of whether you got your copy for free or paid
for it, it all boils down to the licence agreement. If the licence
agreement says you cannot distribute your copy further, then doing so is
illegal no matter what you paid for the licence.

MInd you, most licences seem to make out that doing anything at all is
illegal... I wonder if anyone has tried an action under the (UK) Unfair
