After being away from GPL for a while, I incidentally discovered that
Eldred passed me on the GPLrank. Though it is only with a humble 0.07
points, it still gives me sleepless nights ;)
Anyway, I have to improve my ranking. I decided to do a complete
reinstall of GPL and to check out the latest add-ons. The problem with
all the beautiful updates is that my system, just like my
GPL-handicap, hasn't improved. In my quest to overtake Eldred again
and (less likely) to get a negative rank, I 'need' to upgrade my pc.
So, where do I spend my precious money on? These are my current specs:

P3-733
128 MB PC700 Rambus DRAM
Geforce 256
Logitech Wingman Formula Force

It will be either an extra 256 MB PC800 Rambus DRAM or a Geforce 2
GTS.

What will give the biggest improvement (fps-wise and eventually
rank-wise)? Please don't tell me it's all about the processor's MHz.

Aalt.

BTW: Eldred, thanks for forcing me to improve my lap time at the Ring
;)

With such specs, only a further dose of driving talent can help :).

Seriously, if you're not getting the maximum 36 fps with the below
system in practice mode, then there's something wrong with it.

I just blame the system ;)

Sure I can, but I would like to enjoy the updates and still be able to
*race*. It's all about racing not practising. Beside that, I'm quicker
in races (or is that less slow)

I can't *believe* that you'd have problems with this system...  What's up with
THAT?  Do the graphics updates drag the program down that much?  If so, I'm
glad I haven't loaded them...

:) I just improved my Rouen time by 0.19 <g>

Problems is not the word, maybe annoyance is a better one. Just try to
go to Bruce Johnsons site and not to download and install anything you
see...That's not easy.

WHAT???  Curses, Red Baron...

Well, since I don't know where the site is, I don't have to worry about being
tempted... :-)

Yeah.  By 16.36 seconds more, at least.  :-p

Hi Miha,

I used to race quite a lot on VROC, but if I have time I am mainly to be
found in Nascar 4 lobbies these days. Of course, that is if I don't work
or further develop on my own project, which leaves me with very little
time to play, at least at this point. Is there any Slovenian club for
Vroc racing or such?

To be honest, I'm not sure it's possible to get 36 fps with D3D at full grid
race starts when you're using 3d wheels and have the detail slider bar on
full.  I don't get anywhere near it with my P3-1000/GF2 GTS, so I don't
think either of those upgrades will do the job.  I run with the detail
slider bar on half and no 3d wheels and I get around 30 fps at race starts
(full grid).

At a guess, I'd say the GF2 would probably make more difference than the
RAM.

Phew, what resolution do you use? I'm aiming for 3d wheels and the lot
at 1280x1024 and I don't expect to get the slider on full. For the
time being my solution will be to improve my gridposition and to have
few details in my mirrors :)

Yes, I suspected that. Keeps me wondering which GF2 is best value for
money.

These options are (somewhat) within my budget:
Creative 3D Blaster GeForce2 Pro 64Mb Retail
Leadtek GeForce2 Pro 64MB TV-Out (Retail)
Leadtek GeForce2 GTS 64MB TV-Out
Asus V7700 GeForce2 32MB Deluxe
MSI 8815 GeForce2 Pro 64MB TV-Out
Gainward CardExpert GeForce2 64MB (400)
Asus V6600 GeForce Pro 64MB
ATi Radeon 64MB DDR (Bulk)

Suggestions?

Aalt.

I have a 32 MB GTS (Creative Labs), but if I were buying a GF2 now, I would
get a 64 MB Pro probably.  Of course, the Ultra, or a GF3 is faster, but
they're really pricey.  I don't know which manufacturer though, have a look
on Insight to see which is cheapest.  If you can afford a GF3 then get one
of those instead.

I also use 1280*1024.  I've just upgraded from a p3-650 to the p3-1000, and
it made little difference to GPL, that's why I would get the fastest video
card you can afford.  It's a pitty the D3D renderer isn't faster.

Ahh... we keep losing a lot of GPL guys to N4, too bad .... Good news is,
many are allready coming back to GPL by now :-))

Seriously, about Vroc... as far as I know there are some 3-4 of Slovenes
around Vroc atm, some of them are right among world's fastest drivers
http://gplrank.schuerkamp.de/cgi-bin/nation.cgi . We drive mostly in some of
best GPL leagues like Masters of GPL, GPL World Series and HGPLM, there are
not enough of us to have a decent Slovene League tho :-/

In GPL I go by nickname Mike Puklawsky if u'd like to join us sometime in
Vroc, you are more then welcome :-)
