I just got the paint kit and I have a problem.  The manuals says
that if you start it with a car set not defined, it will prompt.  When I
do this, the machine locks up.  Has anyone else had this problem?

I'm not sure I exactly understand your question - you mean that if you
try to paint a car set other than the cars93 set it locks up?  If that's
what you're asking, then yes, I have that same problem.  The manual says
you can type "paintkit <set>" where <set> is the name of the car set you
want to paint, but this has *never* worked for me.  The machine locks up
tight.  It's a huge pain in the ass, but the only workaround I've been
able to find is that if there's an existing cars93 directory, rename it,
then rename the directory you want to work with to "cars93" and work with
it.  Then when done, rename everything back to the way it was.  Really
irritating, but I see no other solution.  The NASCAR paintkit does the
exact same thing.

p.s.: it's fairly easy to end up with a game that won't run if you're
doing the above and forget what the old name of a car set was, and had
that car set selected the last time you played the game, so be careful!

Hi Brad,

Just to give you a basis of comparison as a starting point in fixing
*your* prob.

From my experience, I use the command line syntax and it works OK for me
*every* time. CARS 93, 94 or 95....97 whatever...

Unless you have incomplete or different release Paintkit software, it
appears to be an *individual* PC conflict. Mine was an orig install from
orig Papyrus Indianapolis Motor Speedway install disk.

So you just type "paintkit cars95" or whatever and it works?  Nope, that
doesn't work for me.  And my brother has the same problem.  I notice you're
in Australia - maybe it's a different version or something?  My paintkit
is the one that came with the Indianapolis expansion pack, and I'm running
game version 1.05, but have never successfully gotten that command line to
work.

Exactly...

We tend to get a mixture of both UK and US packages out here.

I have the US orig IndyCar ver 1.0, UK Track exp. pack (which according
to Jane from Papyrus US is universal), and the US ver. Indianapolis

Fair Dinkum..it really does work for me..every time like a charm. Always
has..bit of a mystery isn't it?

Good Luck....

I just now discovered that if <set> contains an underscore, the machine
freezes up, otherwise it works!  Example: one of my previous car sets was
named "dial_95", indicating I used it when dialing in a multiplayer race,
and it's the 1995 cars.  I just renamed it and the corresponding .dat file
to "dial95", and now I can type 'paintkit dial95' and it works!  This'll
save a *ton* of DOS commands when updating car sets...

**** CAUTION: don't rename a car set if it's the one you have currently
selected in the game!  'cause the game obviously will still be looking for
the old set when you try to boot it the next time, and it won't be there, and
the game won't boot, and if you can't remember what the old name was you'll
have to reinstall the entire game.  (Believe me, I oughta know, after doing
this more than once. :-) ) ****
