Stupid ICR2 Question

Sorry if this is obvious. I've just managed a 179mph lap at Milwaukee
and thought I'd see how it compares. On the Records web page, all laps
are listed as times, not speeds. How do I get to see my lap time in
seconds as opposed to mph?

Thanks in anticipation.

Time (secs) = Track_length(miles) * 3600(secs/hour) / Speed(miles/hour)

So your 179 mph lap equates to:

     1.0 (miles) 3600 / 179 (mph) = 20.111 secs

If you download their Milwaukee setup, which is for a speed lap, not a
race setup, you'll see the file is called mil1926.stg, or something like
that. Which means, if they name their fast laps the same way I do, that
this setup achieved a lap at 196.2mph. And that's fast. The first time I
tried it I ran a 185, but I think I can improve on that.

take a look at the file TRACKS\MLWAUKEE\RECORDS.TXT. The time is there.
It is on the lines marked RACET and RACEP. It's in 1/1000 of seconds,
so if your time is 19.620, then those lines will show 19620.

I've always seen the same time on both lines, can someone explain why
is that?

says...

If you know the name of the track you can find out the distance of one lap.
With that information and your average speed over the lap
you can calculate the the time.

SPEED = DISTANCE / TIME

or put another way TIME = DISTANCE / SPEED

Thanks Samppa, I'm slowly getting there with this amazing sim.

: Time (secs) = Track_length(miles) * 3600(secs/hour) / Speed(miles/hour)

: So your 179 mph lap equates to:

:      1.0 (miles) 3600 / 179 (mph) = 20.111 secs

This is 100% true, however, ICR2 does NOT caculate your speed by this
formula (or if it does it doesn't use exact track measurements).

For example, take your time, as posted in the RECORDS.TXT file.  Now open
up the TRACK.TXT file (for Atlanta it is ATLANTA.TXT, etc) and obtain the
track length.  Now use the formula and you will see that the speed you come
up with is actually less then what is reported by ICR2.

For me, I did roughly a 30.1s lap at Michigan.  ICR2 reports that speed
as 240.8 or so.  If you calculate using the raw numbers, it comes out to
be 239.something.

I hope this is fixed in The Patch.

What Web page were you looking at?  The only one I knowof is the IVGA
Fastlaps & Hotlaps.  Check http://www.scsn.net/users/ivga/ in the ICR2
Hotlaps section.  The record for Mil. is 188mph!  Pretty quick!

I thought the lap time (in seconds) was displayed on the dash as you cross the
start/finish line?  Check that, and you won't need your calculator!<g>

Eldred,

Thanks for the reply. You have me confused with someone who can drive
an indy car _and_ look at the dash ;-( I find that really difficult.
Also, it doesn't give me anything to refer back to. I guess it's no
major problem but it sure is irritating. I would also like to be able
to look at a record of all the telemetry for a lap - a bit like the F1
guys do. Maybe this'll come in a later version?

I've only been going a few weeks but I must admit that this sim racing
is incredible - I would never havebelieved things could be so
realistic on a PC. I'm still finding it hard to feel the differences
when changing the setup - e.g. changing shocks doesn't seem to make
any discernible difference. This is probably due to my inconsistency
and my cruddy yoke. I always hit the wall, just in  different place
each time :-(

Thanks again.

I know what you mean, but just wait until you've done several hundred
(thousand?) laps on a circuit. It's amazing how automatic sections of
it can become. You still get bits wrong of course, but my shifting etc
is near automatic on Vancouver for instance. You'll soon tell a fast
lap by your track position vs what gear you've accelerated into too.
This familiarity, when very slight mistakes are losing me my time,
allows you a certain amount of time to look around at the dash. I
still up-cluck too often though... d8-(

Have you tried head-to-head yet? Against somebody of equal skill on a
particular track it is even MORE incredible!! I have a wheel and I
have noticed my extra tight grip on it several times now. When I first
discovered Nazareth I was bouncing around my room after I left the
practise session I'd been taking part in (and getting progressively
faster in). That was exhilirating to say the least.

Get hold of Mr. Corrigan's EDITRPY utility, available, among other places,
at didnt.doit.wisc.edu. It'll show you your lap times to .001 secs from
a saved replay ...

Hena, thanks for the reply. I did just that and it appears to do the
business. Hopefully such data will be built into a future version.

Actually, I'd RATHER see the lap speed during a race, but it only shows the
time...
In practice, you can see both.
