OT: Was that Hans Stuck??

by Dave Henri » Sat, 20 Nov 1999 04:00:00

I was "trying" to watch an old film on Speedvision about Audi's.
(Auto Union).  test driving one of the first silver arrows cars was a
young driver that "looked" like Stuck.  But I had company over and had
the volume turned down.  Now I know Hans just retired at last year's
FIA race at Laguna Seca.  Is that the SAME Hans?  Those cars were pre
WWII vintage.  Man, I knew he was old...but gollygeewillikers!
Could that have been his father or was that really the man?

Yes, the 1930's Hans Stuck was the father of the one racing today.  The
present one used to go by the name Hans Joachim Stuck when he was on the
fringes of Formula One in the early eighties.  Actually I think he had a
season with Arrows in 1980, in that horrible gold colored car.

Thanks both for the speedy replies.  I saw him and said...Thats Hans
Stuck....The similarity was so great.  But the time frame.  Wow.  I will
always remember his trackside interview at Seca after the pit crew had
cost them any chance of winning.  Man was he steamed.  Commitment like
that is why he was 'the' driver for soooo many years(but at least not as
many as I thought!) at Porche.

Hans Stuck was called "Bergkoenig" or Mountain King because of his
great success in hill climb races with the mid-engine Auto Union race
cars in the 1930s.
I've once seen a movie clip of him, steering his Auto Union somewhere
in the Alps (maybe Grossglockner?), and smiling into the camera while
passing by.

I doubt that.
Last year, Mercedes driver and 1999 FIA GT1 champ Klaus Ludwig retired
after the last race at Laguna Seca.
But Hans-Joachim Stuck jr., son of Hans, raced this year on a BMW M3
in the ALMS.
"Strietzel", as he is often called, is racing since the late 1960s, in
touring cars, F2, F1 and sports cars. He has won, amongst many other
races and titles, the 24 hours of Nuerburgring and Le Mans.

Father and son Stuck look quite similar.

In Goodwood (this or last year), Strietzel drove one of the restored
Auto Union race cars (type C or D) of his father.
And the white cap he wore was apparently his fathers "helmet".
