N4 "blue screen of death"

by Jeep21 » Thu, 08 Nov 2001 09:11:36

I have been running N4 since the day it was released with no problem (other
than not being able to drive it). I have had all papy Nascar products since N1
and have done well. Last night I switched from the #28 car (that I have used
since N1) to the #3. Suddenly I could "drive" again. I was having fun like I
used to have.
Now the problem, today when I started N4 up, the splash screen ran fine but
after it the bule screen came up stating " fatal exception has occurred at
0028:C1733B93 in VXD AU30 Wave (01)+000145A3. Other than the fact that I
changed to a Chevrolet :) what cuold have happened?
I uninstalled and reinstalled N4, reinstalled my Sound card drivers,
reinstalled N4, etc.
If anyone has any suggestions please explain slowly, I'm an old guy and
computers don't agree with me. If nothing else, I guess I'm back to NHeat. :(

TIA

A VXD error has nothing to do with the game its a windows issue

In order, I would reinstall my video card drivers (nvidia? 3dfx?), reinstall
DirectX (this solved a controller issue for me...); actually, first check
what you're running in the background (hit CRTL-ALT-DEL and look at the
list...anything outside of explorer.exe and systray.exe is considered "in
the background," and may be causing slowdowns and conflicts.

But as you said, nothing has changed, so I would think it has to do with
drivers or DirectX files.

Good luck!  Let us know!

That error is sound card related for sure, but I have eneither of the cards
in question its either an error caused by your Audigy card, or an Aureal
card.  Look for a driver up grade, this is almost certainly unrelated to N4
per say, but is a system level problem.

Thanks for all the info, I'll do some more playing with things and let you know
what happens. I did find out that the listed file is a virtual device driver
problem. Anyone know if this might take a reinstall of windows?

The saga ends. After uninstalling the sound card, N4 worked (minus sound of
course). reinstalling drivers from CD for sound card, not working again. I
downloaded the updated drivers from MX300 website, and all is fine in Nascar
land. Thank you to all who helped.
  Back to racing!

Jeep,
Glad to hear all is well with N4 on your system. Just one quick tip on the
.vxd front. Have you ever heard of or used the vxdfix utility? Last time I
did a reinstall of win98se I used it as soon as the OS was up and running
and I have not had any issues with .vxd errors in over a year. I don't know
if that would have been the case or not but before I did my last install of
win98se I did get the odd one of those errors every once in a while. If you
are running anything before WinME (OS wise, not sure if it applies to WinME)
then I suggest it for a little more stabilty.
If you don't have it you can find it here (
http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files007.shtml#VXD ) with a quick explanation
of what it does. It's a very nice little (17k) fix.

Regards,
Robin
