I miss TEN. I miss the reliable racing, I miss the easy to operate
interface for chatting, starting, and joining races. Does anybody
truly believe what we have now with Nascar Racing 4/2002 is equal to
or better than we had on TEN? I had over 40k racing laps on TEN, I
think I had something like 1500 races, but I can't find the text file
I saved from the last day I logged in. I got to 81st, and slid back to
the low 100's in rank right before it went down.

These days I go into races, get wrecked by some bonehead that never
heard of TEN, and doesn't understand that you don't win by knocking
people into the wall. I've maybe raced 50 pickup races since TEN went
away, maybe 40 league races. None have been bonehead-free and none
were that exciting. The leagues I've been in have been plagued with
technical difficulties, and stupid politics stemming from people
running their own servers. And the gameplay hasn't been that great.

I'm waiting for an Xbox or PS-2 online racing simulation to come out
that has the kind of quality racing that TEN had. I don't expect the
first few to get it right, but eventually they will. I don't really
care if it's Nascar-based or not, as I was into Indycars and Imsa GTP
way before Nascar. It's just that up to this point, TEN had the best
system for racing online. And I still miss it.

I always felt Hawaii was better.  The Long distnace bills and technical
ineptitude with PCs of the day made it a very close and fun place to race.
By the time TEN started up I felt that ALL the wreckers were now online much
to easily :)

You haven't tried our league.  If someone wrecks too much we suspend and/or
remove them.  We review all races for wrecks and penalize people who cause
them.  This is done by a Review Committee made up of volunteer league
members and rotated every 2 months.

Our server is connected to the Internet by a T3 line that has nothing else
on it during the evening (8:00pm est) when the races are run.

All league decisions are voted on.

We have fixed setup and open setup divisions plus beginner and veteran
divisions.

We use a private Yahoo message board to easily communcate with each other
plus use PalTalk for after race chatting.

And everything is free........

Is it as good as TEN - no, it's better.  Both myself and the other person
running this league have raced on TEN for a long time and even remember the
Hawaii days.  You're the kind of racer we want.  Someone who's been around a
while and doesn't like wrecks.

One thing about our league.  We have some brutal competition.  There's a lot
of people who can win on any night.  Nobody is running away with a bunch of
wins.  We also get about 20 people per race.  Once we start getting 25+ per
race we will stop accepting new members for a while.

Sounds like a lot of leagues actually.  Good work.

I'm sure there are good leagues out there. I'm just saying that the whole
interface built into the game, and the way rankings are (sorta) kept leaves
too much out. I have been in several good leagues. While on TEN I was in a
Friday night, 75% league that had 15 of the top 25 ranked people on TEN. I
barely ever got a top 5 but I loved the racing. I believe I recognize some of
the names on this NG as folks who ran in that league. The league was very well
run. I understand that some leagues are still very well run. But, I liked TEN
for the pickup races just as much, if not more. Who here remembers waiting for
Dalejr3 to join a race just so you could get in it? And how fast those races
filled up? I cussed out my share of boneheads, and made my share of boneheaded
moves (first race of 98 season in that 75% league, last lap of our "Daytona"
race, I was in 4th or 3rd and went for a pass... crashed out myself and the
guy in front of me... ended up 8th). I'm looking for online racing where I can
sit down and hop in a race within a few minutes, recognize a few of the names
maybe, and RACE. Not spend 20 minutes to a half hour just trying to find a
race, get in, get crashed into on the first lap and have to start over again.
I'd like to find out how fast other people go on some of these new tracks,
figure out if my setups work, have some fun against other people. The current
system doesn't work very well unless you have a considerable amount of time to
devote to finding the right game to join, or restricting yourself to racing in
a league. And I don't have the time to join 5 leagues so I can race 5 nights a
week. Somehow TEN made the system useable for pickup races, and out of 15
races in a night, maybe I had a bad race 2 or 3 times. Now I have horrible
races 5 out of 6. When I get up from the computer disgusted at the evening's
attempted racing almost every try, I think that means the system isn't working
for me. Especially when I'm certain we once had a system that worked pretty
well once upon a time.

OK, I re-read my post and I think I know how to clarify some.

The racing game that I want to play online doesn't exist.

(FYI The games I play offline are N2002, F2001, and SCGT)

The game I'm looking for will probably happen on a console. I'm getting really
fed up with PC's for ***.

The first company to put out a decent racing sim, with better-than-arcade
gameplay, and realistic usable garage options, AND a really good (stellar
even) multi-player setup will get my attention. It has to be great at pickup
races. If it's something like gran Turismo, that's great, as long as the
gameplay is carefully crafted.

In a Nascar sim, it has to have better (somewhat more realistic) driving
characteristics than what is available now. Maybe EA will just buy all the
Papyrus stuff, hire their people and get it over with. It will probably have
to be a little LESS realistic than N4/2002. Nascar 2 was a great balance as
far as how much time you had to spend to get good. The current learning curve
is too steep to be successful on a console, and the current console games are
too easy and unrealistic.

It just has to have GREAT pickup racing. Otherwise people won't be interested
long enough to keep playing. The leagues that get created are a bonus, icing
on the cake, but catering to them isn't going to get you the casual player
that is interested enough to stay (and keep buying new games or paying for
access). If you make a system that's decent to play, you'll get the leagues.
You can probably even build in some league creation tools into the system, and
that might be a good selling point.

HEHE

Yeah, there were some people on TEN that needed lessons all the time. My
squelch list was about 40 people long. But I always thought that the decent
racers outnumbered the boneheads by a large margin. I have lots and lots of
favorite memories of racing on TEN. Like sending Lexxus my South Boston setup
and him telling me it was undrivable, impossibly loose. But he was within a
couple tenths with his own setup. Also, being one of the first to hit 100mph
laps at Myrtle beach was cool. Watching several people burn their tires off
doing 115's at North Wilksborough early in a 50% race and driving past them 40
laps later was a classic. The pickup racing was very good most of the time.
There were a few periods of horrible lag, warping, etc. but they got most of
the issues worked out. Then they shut down.

Hey Steve, I remember racing you a lot on TEN.  I have a couple things to
offer here.  One, this site: http://www.elworth.u-net.com/nrosrank.htm has
the latest stats (not the final ones, but close, with some other cool
stats).  (I actually have the complete stats dating to the last race run on
TEN somewhere; they're in a big excel file I think.)  I agree with you about
nothing else better has come along since TEN, and that's pretty sad with the
way we have progressed technologically in terms of the sims we race, and the
amount of people connected to the internet.  There is one system that is
close to TEN, though I don't race on it due to lack of TEN-like people and a
pos java interface they use.  I'm sure you have heard of it, but if not:
http://www.onlineracin.com.

And finally, the coolest thing imo to happen to sim racing since TEN is a
league called Virtual Racing World (http://www.VirtualRacingWorld.com).  It
was started earlier this year by Nim Cross, and has some of the coolest
elements to be implemented into what we do.  We even have Dale Earnhardt Jr.
racing with us!  The concept is to add more realism to sim racing, and
correct flaws in the physics engine that Papy can't seem to fix.  Check it
out, you will recognize a LOT of the names on there, and almost everyone of
them raced in the Pro Series.    <g>

PS  Hurry up and sign up, and hopefully I can hire you!      LMAO!  (You'll
undestand why this is so funny after you visit the VRW site)

Fixed the damage.  You wreck your car and get damage that should be
race-ending, you're done.  You wreck your car, it costs your team money.

Well no, if Papy can't do it, I seriously doubt anyone else can.  :-)  It
seems it's hardcoded into the sim that makes it impossible to adjust
correctly.  Along the same lines as player breakdowns.  They tried to deny
they were on, but they knew they were, simply because they couldn't change
it.

Not so much they couldn't change it, just to cheap to do it.

I wish for something like that too. I have never bought or owned any console systems because no good simulators exist for them as of
yet . But as far as multiplayer pickup racing goes, "boneheads" will most likely be infinitley  more abundant with consoles because
of the sheer numbers of console systems sold. IMO

hehehehe I remember this system. I hated it... made me look bad :-P

Rank  ScreenName  Ten Rank  Avg. Skill  Wins  Top 5s Top 10s  Incidents   Laps

that's a little better :-) I always used to look at my top 5 count and think
"At least I was close!"

I'm considering joining a league, but right now my job is sucking up so much
time I don't want another hobby that feels like a job. I'd be part time at
best. That's why I'm whining mostly... need something to blow off steam when I
have some free time, not on a strict schedule. I still think that a tightly
controlled racing system will discourage the average bonehead, leaving of
course the dedicated boneheads. Sometimes they are fun to race and wreck
with... I may check that list again for my favorite boneheads... lol

I'll check that virtual racing site TD
Thanks

I miss TEN

I feel your pain.  I raced a little after TEN went down but, it was mostly
in a league.  It didn't take long to see that the world of "free" online
racing was not a very fun world.  Like you say, there are just too many
idiots online that got their racing training in the Quake arenas.  I haven't
been online in about a year now.  Just doesn't seem to be any point anymore.
