in "the good old days" of GPL

Would be interesting...I don't know how much I would like it with the
hairpin and the chicanes though...

Well the hairpin was always there (pits and start/finish line used to be
there, IIRC) but weren't the chicanes absent in the original design?
Originally the track was designed to use the surface roads of Ille Notre
Dame that remained after the Worlds Fair and was generally a much more
flowing and natural track than todays version. Model the original for GPL
and I think it'll drive like  a flat Rouen.

Yes and no.  Only one chicane (before the pit complex) wasn't originally
there.  Before, it was actually a little faster right/left turn.  The pit
complex was exiting the chicane, while some straight were a little more
twisty.  But about 50% of the track is original now to 1978.

I also don't see the point of having such track in GPL.  Suzuka was one bore
to drive in GPL (like almost all Icr2 tracks also), the Circuit
Gilles-Villeneuve would be no different.
