I just tried doing this and I went back to WinME last night so I hope you
have better luck than I did. The big thing is to get service pack 2 and the
compatabilty patch so you can set games to run in Win98 mode. I had Win2000
Pro so maybe that might have something to do with it.

I think you'll love it!  Make sure you back up all your files first, then do
a fresh install, it will probably work best that way.  I haven't tried an
upgrade install though I would think it might cause problems.

I'd strongly recommend setting up your PC to dual-boot W98 and W2K.  It's
not as difficult as it sounds - when setting up W2K just say 'no' to upgrade
and select an alternative partition to install to.  Do a web search, there
are plenty of sites that give details.

As long as you have another drive or partition to install it on your ok.
Installing both O/S to the same partition can cause some problems.  As they
say been there done that.

I am currently running win2k (pro with service pack 2) and have had some small
problems, but everything is working as of now.  SCGT runs fine, Nascar 99 won't
work but that was steering wheel problem, Heat works fine (better game anyway),
f1 2000 worked for awhile and doesn't now (still working on it..)..

Based on MY experiance--Make sure you get Direct x 8.0a...had some conflicts
with MS steering wheel--needed to use win2k usb driver not the software that
came with it.

I have never heard of the "compatability patch" but if anyone has info on tell
me where to look...

Doing my best daily to***off the Left Wing Lunatic Fringe...

Yup, 2+ OS's on 1 partition is a major no no.

I use 2 drives on my Win2k/WinXp dual boot, no problems as of yet.
Both are formatted with NTFS BTW.

Yep sure is. I knew that going in. I was in need of a format anyway and I
wanted to play around with Win2000 before iinstalling it "for real". I will
say that when ever it came down to it Win2000 never 'lost' to WinME. :)

MadDAWG,
Just get a couple of extra drives. On average here in the USA a 30-40 gig
ATA100 drive costs around $100.00 a hell of allot cheaper than say 5 years
ago.
Let's see if I can remember, that old SCSI Full Height 5-1/4" Seagate 3gb
Brick, heh that a buddy from a Graphic Arts Company handed to me in 1995,
"This cost about $15,000.00 in 1992"....... LOL

6 drives in this box I'm using.
Windows ME: 3 drives in 7 partitions,
1 - 40gb Western Digital & 2 - 30gb Western Digital's, 1 on cartridge
carrier
Internet uptime for the month of September 634.00 hours.
9 months on this OS install. Kernel was taken out after one 10hr. FTP
download, when using ZoneAlarm pre-June patch.

Win2k/XP Dual Boot: 2 Drives NTFS partitions
1 - 40gb Maxtor (Win2k) & 1 - 30gb Maxtor (WinXP).

WinME BU/Test Drive 1 - 30gb Maxtor.

Ya can get a removable cartridge carrier if you are a little shy about
opening the case and swapping cables.

But it is nice to keep your old known working OS/games if you do get stuck
on some compatibility issue. Although it does take more time to maintain 2
or 3 OS's.
But from what I've read about some posts here; several reformats/10 times
installing the game, that takes time too. And a lot of hair pulling.     LOL

I'm about as far from that as you can get. I don't even have screws in my
case anymore because the holes are all stripped out!

Like i said I was in need of a format for ME anyway and I was considering
going to Win2000 pro so I figured***it lets see what its like before I
set it up to stay. I ended up going back to WinME for my game box because N4
was about the only game I got running with some kind of problem. Oh well I
got Win2000 Pro for my server box now: TNT2 Ultra, 950 AMD Athlon, and 384
meg of pc133 just to run a printer :)

FWIW been running W2K for over two years this OS had taken care of all my
*** needs without a
single prob.GPL, N3, N4, SCGT, Heat, WWII Fighters, Crimson Skies etc. I
have always dual booted
using one OS as a backup OS considering the cost of HD's. I have since moved
on from W2K to XP Pro
actually dual booting with W2K. I never use W2K anymore  since I 've
installed XP as I prefer the
performnce and feel of XP. You really can't go wrong with either one of
these OS's they use
more resources but hell at the price of hardware these days thats really not
an issue for increased
stability and performance . My .02.

Do you know if Win2000 is better than Win2000 Pro for ***? I tried
Win2000 Pro and N4 was the only game that ran without any problems. F12001
and F1 Chanp Season 2000 both wouldn't see split axiz pedals on my Logi
wheel which they both do in ME. DTR wouldn't run at all even with sp2 and
the compatibilty patch. Since those are my "big 3" if you will it just
wasn't worth the hassel for only N4. I will agree that Win2000 Pro in genral
is a better setup, but when it won't run what you wanna run its pretty much
worthless.

AFAIK, there is no "win2000". There is win2k pro (the normal version
for desktop use, supports 2 CPUs) then win2k server for 4cpus, then 2
others for more cpus.

Unless you're getting this confused with Win XP pro?
